Everyone’s always posting appreciation posts for their significant others, but honestly mine has been more loyal than most men I’ve ever met. So this is for my backpack.

We met in 2009. I was younger, dumber, probably emotionally unstable, and somehow this backpack looked at me and said, “Yeah, I can carry that.” And baby… it has. Literally and emotionally.

This backpack has been thrown into car trunks, dragged through airports, soaked in rain, covered in sand, shoved under bus seats, slept on in hostels, used as a pillow in train stations, and overloaded to the point where the zipper was fighting for its life. And not once did it complain. Not once did it say “this is too much for me.” Meanwhile I cry when my phone battery hits 20%.

This backpack has seen every version of me. The reckless version. The heartbroken version. The “I’m moving across the world with $47 and vibes” version. The version that swore she was gonna get her life together after this one last trip. It’s carried bikinis, journals, fake IDs, dirty laundry, books I pretended I was gonna read, snacks for emotional support, and probably enough loose change to finance a small nation.

At this point it’s less of an object and more of an old war companion. The straps are tired. The fabric is hanging on by faith alone. There are mystery stains I’ll never investigate because honestly I don’t want answers. But every rip feels earned. Every faded patch feels like proof that I actually lived.

People always talk about comfort items like childhood blankets, but this backpack became mine. My little portable piece of home. My emotional support luggage. My ride or die.

I know one day it’ll finally give out on me and honestly I’m not prepared for that emotionally. Because how do you throw away something that carried your entire youth on its back?

Anyway. Here’s to 17 years of chaos, survival, adventure, questionable packing choices, and unconditional service. If this backpack has zero fans, I am dead. by @efghijkates
