🥕Equitable Food Oriented Development
✊🏽BIPOC coalition shifting food systems through community asset building
$2,800,000 + moved through the EFOD Fund

POSTS STORIES REELS

Last week, Detroit hosted the third EFOD Unconference — and we were honored to open our doors their host site. ❤️🖤💚

From D-Town Farm to the Detroit Food Commons, folks from across the country gathered to do what the Equitable Food-Oriented Development Collaborative has always been about: building community-owned food economies through non-extractive capital, deep relationship, and shared learning.

This work didn't start last week. It started over a decade ago with conversations between Dana Harvey and Neelam Sharma — conversations that our own Malik Yakini helped expand into what became Equitable Food-Oriented Development. Since then, the Collaborative has grown from a shared framework into a Fund that's deployed more than $12 million to 53 organizations nationwide, including a new grantmaking partnership with First Nations Development Institute centering Native-led wealth building.

To gather this year's Unconference here — on land D-Town Farm has stewarded, inside a Commons built for community ownership — is a full-circle moment for our network and for Detroit's food sovereignty movement.

We showed up to learn from partners' economic models, to break bread at Lafayette Greens, and to leave with practices grounded in EFOD's core criteria: community ownership, wealth building, and place. The work continues.

It’s HOT out but meeting with our friends of @efodcollab was so cool! For the past 3 years the Equitable Food Oriented Development national coalition has supported our construction project at 59th & Racine, so it was a joy to show them our progress during their visit to Chicago! Last week, we shared about the federal Farm Bill and @healfoodalliance’s call to action to demand a bill that works for people and the planet, not corporate profit (see our previous post and click the link in our bio to take action). Today, we’re lifting up another bill happening on the state level in Washington.

Our EFOD network partner @foodjusticec2c is calling on WA residents to support SB 6045, a bill that strengthens farmworkers’ right to collective bargaining.

Farmworkers have historically been excluded from many of the labor protections other workers receive. SB 6045 moves to correct that injustice by ensuring workers have a real voice in their workplaces.

If you’re in Washington State, contact your Senator and urge them to vote YES on SB 6045.

📍 WA RESIDENTS: We have the form to contact your Senator linked to our Linktree. Share with your folks! by @efodcollab

Food and farm workers are fighting for safety and dignity.

Farmers are organizing for climate and market resilience.

Communities across the U.S. are demanding clean water, clean air, and healthy food.

And the House Ag Committee just released a Farm Bill that does none of that.

Instead of investing in workers, climate resilience, or local economies, this bill doubles down on corporate profit — Big Food, Big Ag, Big Tech. It prioritizes ag tech and pesticide-heavy “solutions” while keeping SNAP underfunded.

These policies cause direct harm to the very people who feed us.

We deserve a Farm Bill that builds thriving futures, not corporate margins.

Click the link in bio and tell your representative to VOTE NO on this Farm Bill and demand Congress go back to the drawing board.

We’re calling for a Farm Bill that:
• Protects food and farm workers
• Helps farmers recover from climate disasters
• Invests in BIPOC producers
• Includes Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) in conservation
• Strengthens local and regional food systems

Take action today. Tell Congress to vote NO on Farm Bill 2.0. Every vote counts.

Ownership is often framed as a pathway to stability and opportunity, yet for many communities, especially Black, Brown, and working-class neighborhoods, traditional models prioritize short-term returns over long-term resilience. Families are displaced. Small businesses are priced out. Wealth flows out instead of staying rooted where it’s created.

In Part 1 of Common Future’s Redefining Risk in the Ownership Economy series, we examined what ownership looks like when it’s grounded in belonging and shared prosperity.

Join EFOD Steering Committee member Ismail Samad, alongside leaders to discuss real-world approaches to community-rooted ownership, such as mission-driven financing to models that redefine risk on our terms.

@secrollins and the @usdagov announced that they are cancelling $148.6 million in funding for young, beginning, LGBTQ+ farmers, and farmers of color. This includes cancelling contracts that support access to land, capital, and markets for underserved producers; education on environmental stewardship; and innovation in urban forestry.

Building a resilient food system depends on farmers having access to these essential resources.

HEY EVERYBODY,

We need your help! 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽

Please vote today for EFOD’s session proposal for SOCAP25 in partnership with Justice Funders & the Libra Foundation, “Shift Capital, Shift Power: Community-controlled investing for regenerative economy.” This session will explore how community-controlled, movement-owned, and democratically governed investment vehicles are playing a critical role in advancing justice and shared prosperity by building the economic power of communities who have historically been shut out from decision making about the flow of capital. Community voting ends on April 13th!

New reporting from the @healfoodalliance details the ways in which farmers and rural communities will face immediate economic harm without the CFPB’s oversight of manufactured home lending, protection against predatory fees in areas with limited banking options. At the beginning of March, EFOD’s Steering Committee gathered in El Paso, TX, and Anthony, NM for our Annual Retreat, coming together to reconnect, strategize, and ground ourselves in the work ahead.

A huge thank you to our hosts, @lamujerobreracommunitygarden and @lasemillafoodcenter for welcoming us into their spaces, feeding us with love, and sharing their deep knowledge. We spent time with La Semilla learning about desert farming, water sovereignty, and the long-standing agricultural traditions that continue to nourish the desert region. Members of La Mujer Obrera shared the history of Chamizal, a community forcibly uprooted by shifting borders while still holding onto its culture, organizing power, and relationship with the land and one another.

Throughout the retreat, we reflected on how to better support community food leaders who are building power through land, economic self-determination, and cooperative ownership—and how we ensure that capital and resources stay in the hands of the people driving the work. From deep conversations, shared laughs in the kitchen while making tortillas, and navigating desert storms, this was a retreat to remember!

A deep thank you to our Steering Committee members for taking time away from their organizations, families, and communities to be here—your leadership and dedication make this work possible.

Onward! 💪🏾🌍 by @efodcollab

We’re heartbroken by the fires in LA and all the families, neighbors, workers, and businesses who are struggling. 🙏❤️‍🩹 We’re stepping up to help some of the most impacted local workers with a new emergency fund – providing direct cash assistance to street vendors, landscape workers, recyclers, and other outdoor workers who live and work in fire areas.

Impacted outdoor workers can learn more about program eligibility and apply now for $500 in assistance. Applications are due by 1/17. Limited funds are available and we’ll give out assistance on a first come, first serve basis prioritizing those most directly impacted by the fires. Link in bio to apply! Help us spread the word. For questions, call 213-435-1151.

If you can help, we’re asking community members and funders to donate to our GoFundMe to help us support even more outdoor workers. Every dollar donated will go directly to LA workers in need through our network and our partners.

In moments like these, the urgency of our work feels even greater. We know many in our community may be feeling disheartened, uncertain, and perhaps grieving today. But movement building and the drive for radical change aren’t bound to an election or achieved overnight. Our commitment is for the long haul, as we envision a world where future generations can thrive. This is why we gather, why we organize, and why we continue to push forward—because resilient, just, and liberated futures aren’t just dreams; they are our purpose.

This moment calls on us to keep showing up for each other, to continue building, and to stand firm in our vision for a liberated, resilient future. Let us draw strength from our connections, our shared histories, and our belief in the power of community. This work, grounded in hope and resistance, is more essential now than ever. Thank you for being part of this journey, and for helping us collectively build the systems that nourish and sustain us.

With deep gratitude and solidarity,
The EFOD Collaborative ✊🏽 by @efodcollab
