Been reading, watching, learning, growing, changing, and wondering what makes sense in this often fast and chaotic world. Asking myself how can I be aware, be helpful, supportive, trust, fight, and ultimately be rooted in presence.

Two realms I always learn, grow and practice:
Nature + Storytelling

These places, spaces, and communities are my teachers because I feel present, curious, get to use all my senses and connect with people, unplugged, using all of theirs. And, it’s all so much bigger than me ❤️🧜🏽‍♀️🎭

🎞️ EMULSION TEST 2025 • pt 1

While film is balanced for either 3200K, tungsten, or 5600K, daylight, the process of scanning and transferring the film to a digital medium offers a lot of opportunity to manipulate color. Traditionally, I would communicate this to the lab by photographing a gray card under the lighting conditions I wish to appear “neutral.”

These days when I shoot a day interior scene in mixed light on digital I often set my white balance at 4300 and let my practicals go a little warm and windows go a little cool. For this emulsion test, I tried doing different versions of mixed lighting on a tungsten stock, a daylight stock, and with different colored light on my gray card to manipulate what would essentially be my “white balance.”

Every Tuesday I am celebrating actors I love!

Today I am spotlighting Elizabeth Frances, a free-spirited actor who continues to push herself to new levels. I have had the opportunity to see Elizabeth’s talent and skill evolve over many years now, but I believe there is still so much more to see from her. Her adventurous nature extends beyond entertainment - she insists on living a big, expansive life. And that will give her all she needs to fuel characters for the foreseeable future.

I asked Elizabeth a few questions and here is what she had to say:

WHAT IS A MEMORABLE AUDITION STORY YOU HAVE?
My very first audition, EVER, was when I was…maybe in fourth or sixth grade, but one I found for Annie. I had no idea what I was doing, nor any acting/singing experience. I went in, had worked forever on this sheet music. I also had no idea that Annie didn’t “look” like me (way before DEI, etc). I convinced my dad to drive me down to the Old Globe, I walked in all by myself, and mid song, I forgot the words. We started again, and I forgot again. Then I started to cry! But I finished and left back to the car, and when my dad asked me how it went, I told him. “So are you gonna quit?” He asked, and out popped “No way!”. Because I loved what I did, I went home, read more scripts, bugged a local theater to teach me Shakespeare, etc etc. And I think it’s my favorite story, because there are obvious wins for others to celebrate on the outside, but this was my first win on the inside. Because it’s what built my joy and determination and relentlessness in all that I attempt, regardless of outcome.

WHAT GOAL DO YOU STILL WANT TO ACHIEVE?
I would love to lead a series. And I actually love comedy a lot. My way into this world and my work is processing sadness and regurgitating joy. I also have a docuseries I’d love to get made about female freedivers, and a few others I’ve cowritten. I wanna see some glorious mixed race and queer female protagonists get their Eat Pray Love or Ted Lasso on. We are complicated and seeking joy, those are stories I want to make.

I was poooooped after a long week, and the best way to bring a seaster back to life is the water. Our friend Casey decided a birthday boat trip was how she wanted to celebrate, so @justgetwet_ with Cap’n Chris and Nathan was the winning ticket.

My union @sagaftra and my fellow actors are officially on strike AND in solidarity with #wga

Making a living as an artist or performer is challenging and difficult, as many industries are at this time. It takes courage and bravery to jump in the deep end and find a way to do what you are compelled to, even when statistics are against you. And as difficult as now can be, for many, we also need to protect our future. PEOPLE bring joy and laughter, healing, and a mirror to pain. Our human experience shared on screen, and our hearts taking the journey. Story is medicine and the ones who work and sacrifice to tell it and help the world feel things and be entertained, especially in times of hardship, need to be able to feed themselves, now and in the future. There is great disparity in the ability to do so for the vast majority of artists, and I stand behind my union and the #wga to protect the future of story, of those who tell it, and the financial ability to live a life while doing so.

Been fortunate to celebrate my birthday all month this month with so many fantastic humans.

What’s come up as we’ve reflected on life, has been the feeling of uncertainty. Whether it be the industry, the economy, etc.

Being a mixed race queer woman starting my career when diversity and inclusion didn’t exist, graduating college after the writers strike and the year the economy tanked, and ppl to care for, there was a hell of a lot of uncertainty. I had no money, debt, jobs that fell away, and all the things I thought I could work towards seemed so far away and out of any remote possibility.

So I had to focus and invest in what I did have: my health, the love of family and friends around me, my education, my talent, a city full of free activities (yes, hiking to the Griffith observatory is free) and my dreams.

It was one step at a time, through several other “day jobs” that I chose that would help me grow my body/mind/spirit and help me feed myself and others. For my own sanity, I had to bloom where I was planted instead of wishing I was planted elsewhere. And I needed to find my super power. What if….I had everything I needed? What if…the thing I wanted to grow was in me the entire time? What if…being fully present in my current experience is preparing me for even more wonderful things than I could fathom for myself?

I know for certain that the inevitable thing is change, the cyclical ups and downs of life, and didn’t wanna ride those waves I wanted to learn to surf them by feeling everything, learning, and taking stock in my present world and what I DO have, the reminder of how rich I truly am. Bc I ’m alive. We are alive.

I’m not famous, I’m not rich, but a good amount of the time I’m present and joyful whether it’s when I was 16 working at In N Out or on a tv set. And I don’t know everyone here, but I just wanna say, in all the uncertainty, grow where you’re planted, bloom where you’re planted, and don’t measure your success or happiness by what you’re told it should look like. But rather, by how you feel in your own person, your own body, your own heart. You’re the only one living YOUR life. Sending ❤️ today from this lil #pisces 🧜🏽‍♀️ by @efrances03
