POSTS STORIES REELS

What would you give to become a legend? ⚔️

Yes, it’s official—I’m back on “Ivory & Onyx” after taking a (much-needed) break to finish the first draft of another project.

If you’ve stuck with me through these (honestly, pretty rough) few months, thank you! You’re a gem of a human being. ✨

If you’re new here, hey, hi, hello! I hope you’ll love my childish immortals with way too much power on their hands as much as I do.

Stick around for updates on my path to publication. 📝

(Psst…I’m currently querying this project! DM me if interested.)

It’s time for a refresher 😅

Not just of my information, but also those pesky post templates…and now I’ve got over 21K new faces to share this with!

When I say thanks for being here, I MEAN it! I’m so glad you’ve found your way to my writing page because, let’s face it, this can be a tough and isolating experience. 📝

Whether you’re working through your TBR or typing away at your current draft (or both), I’m so glad you’re here.

Share your journey in the comments! I can’t wait to meet you. 🥰

Writing is better when I’m done for the day 🫠

There’s a better way…

It’s a canon event, no matter how you take this advice! Something you love in your story has to change.

Here’s some prompts to get you going (that aren’t just unaliving a character):

✅ Change is (almost always) worse

K*lling offf a character ends their arc, and there’s so many worse things.

What about making them the only one that survives? They can’t not be impacted by the guilt.

Why not severely injure your super-independent character?

If they have to be unalived, twist the knife by making it a senseless sacrifice. Make it amount to nothing. Make it hurt.

✅ The Graveyard

If you don’t already, you need a final resting place for those chapters / scenes / characters that have to be cut.

You worked so hard on them; why not save them for later, when you can reuse them?

✅ The Waiting Period

Don’t start revising immediately after you finish the manuscript, whether it’s fresh off an edit or the first draft. You’ll cut more that way from frustration.

Give your words—and yourself—time to rest. You’ll be able to see a different perspective after a week or two (or a month).

The only way to describe these writing things 📝

Heh…yeah…

If you’re frustrated at ANY point of the writing process, maybe say something. We could all use it 🙂

Nine times out of ten, I’m actually doing this…

I’m obviously not writing here, but what you don’t see is me holding my phone with my neck trying (and failing) to capture a video of me “working on my manuscript”.

This advice isn’t about common grammar mistakes or querying tips or anything I do more often. 📝

It’s about perspective.

So, how does this silly exercise help writers grow?

✅ It puts a name on it

You’re a writer, and even after you’ve become brave enough to tell others about it, you have to be even braver to talk about it to strangers / editors / potential readers.

You must get used to feeling silly.

Recording something like this is an exercise in confidence (psst: and none of the ~20 people in that room questioned me for a second, by the way. They didn’t care).

✅ It beats stress

See that program I have open? Yeah, that’s a Revit model I was stressing over for midterms.

See how aggressively I was typing before slacking off? That was to get some of the anxiety out.

And the camera? Well, that was to bring me out of the moment and make me laugh.

✅ It takes off external pressure

I don’t NEED to capture a perfect aesthetic writing session. I only need something in the background to share my experience (AKA, B-roll)

This makes creating content a two-hour exercise to plan out an entire week from collected footage (AKA, necessary marketing for aspiring authors).

And planning ahead means more writing time during the week.

Writing doesn’t always mean writing. It means enduring the process through the stress / roadblocks / doubt, and that looks different for everyone.

Make the stupid videos. Type nonsense for a moment. Become used to standing out.

You were always meant to.

(Keep writing, friend.)
