I stopped journaling this year and started drawing bits and pieces of my days. Yes I’m a terrible artist but something about engraving a memory on paper, with work and focus and attention, makes it indelible and permanent. As opposed to a throwaway photo that I’ll forget the second I click the button. Anyways, I love you all and hope these bring back some good memories for you too. by @eggmcmutton

The Big Land. Found a rabbit’s foot on the beach near a shipwreck that killed 12 men back in 1922. Both good and bad luck, I suppose. The lighthouse there still stands watch over the wreckage. Labrador’s a place of strange bedfellows - like the mines, dams, power lines, and rails that cut up the otherwise untouched expanses of spruce bog and taiga. A perfectly paved road to nowhere. Frontier Jungle Jim’s in dead malls. Catholic shrines at drunk driving crash sites. The last true company towns in Canada, still holding on to the 1970s vision of a wood-panelled utopia. I highly recommend driving 5,000km to take it all in! by @eggmcmutton

Quick jaunt to Blackberry Mountain in the Smokies: fine wine, warm sun, Tennessee whiskey, moments of wonder. I learned so much, experienced true southern hospitality, and got called “ma’am” a million times in the softest of drawls. We begged them all to come visit us in Fogo so we can repay the favour - but I don’t know if we can compete with the Appalachian Mountains for beauty. by @eggmcmutton

Winter on Fogo Island is a strange combination of hibernation, cabin fever, green apple Sour Puss, and Amundsen’s 1910 expedition to the South Pole. The gales start to whisper your name. The ferry gives up running altogether. The only way to stay warm is to shake your ass at a direly under-attended community dance. But check out those sunsets! For sunsets like this I’d withstand a million “old-fashioned” winters! by @eggmcmutton

Tonight is the final night of the 2025 season at the Inn. I am so proud of all the special occasions I helped put together this year as events manager, working alongside many amazing people who are united in their pursuit of warmth, welcome, and wonder. Every last-minute tweak, every floor swept, every flower picked, every fork straightened, every song sung, every plate presented, every outlandish request honoured (and delivered with a smile) — it’s what makes us the only hotel in the world that feels like you’re home.

Yes, it’s hard to get here, but have you seen those sunsets? They make it even harder to leave 🩵 by @eggmcmutton

fogo island nightlife - long evenings are perfect for fox-watching, tide-pooling, sun-setting, dart-throwing, shit-talking, fire-stoking, and booty-shaking in the community hall. Oh, and light beers. by @eggmcmutton

This is my first time travelling alone abroad and I'm so glad I decided to come here, even though it's not on most North American people's radars. Taiwan is really popular with Asian tourists but I'm usually the only white/western person at any given place, and I find it freeing to be so conspicuously Other, to not worry about blending in or having "authentic" experiences. I wear the dorky sandals, I visit the tourist traps, I say "ni hao" in what is probably an atrocious accent. I am embracing the twin feelings of being uncool and uncomfortable in this new, beautiful place. by @eggmcmutton

The 2024 season comes to a close! My job at the Fogo Island Inn this year was kinda "making things happen" -- from screech-ins to fireworks to family reunions to weddings, with the addition of picking flowers and moving VERY HEAVY furniture and delivering room service to a man in marvel comic panties [not pictured]. Forget the billionaires and broken-down ferries and bilious weather -- I am in earnest when I say that every day here is fun and I am surrounded by such beautiful people. Some sweet!
