I met this babe in college in 1983. We had a lot in common. We were a bit competitive early on. It was kind of like that song from Annie Get Your Gun “Anything you can do, I can do better.” I did this. Well, I played that. I went here. Nice, but I went there. Sheila had grown up with four brothers it became pretty clear that she wasn’t going to take any ***t from some boy or whatever I became when I was no longer a boy. I admired that. That was kind of how it all started.

Today it’s 36 years since we got married on a similarly sweltering July 14th. It’s a fast ride when you’re with someone and most of the time in sync. Life is not perfect. It’s beautiful, it’s messy. It smells great, it stinks up. Things go right, things go wrong. While we were lucky to find each other, we certainly did the work to stay together, to navigate the craziness of the world when it was just us and later when we had our two sons. Out of all the difficult things that happen in life - a life together - with Sheila love has always been easy. Not to say she didn’t bring me back down to earth routinely or surgically pick me apart when I was foolishly trying to argue a point about our relationship. That didn’t feel so easy. But loving her has always been easy.

I can’t say we immediately had any grand plan. We just kind of fell into life together. A life together. And that’s where, maybe, the luck comes into it. The song “A Little Bit of Everything” by Dawes contains a line about overthinking love. “I think that love is so much easier than you realize. If you can give yourself to someone, then you should.” Well, that might be a lyrically simplified version of things, but I agree. And I think that’s what happened to us. 43 years later we are still doing our best to give ourselves to each other, despite all that has come our way. And that makes me a lucky man.

Grateful for William G. (1930-2020). He gave the best advice. Not so much about what he would do, but how could you make the best decision that would set you up to make more decisions in the future. When I figured out that’s what he was doing, I thought that was pretty cool. by @eghayward

RIP to this hooligan. Grover was a mostly good dog, but carried a lot of baggage. He still retained some of that raw/wild street dog attitude. For all the problems that caused, you had to admire it. Still, he was a real comfort to Sheila, her protector in some ways, and her illness took a toll on him. He was at his best when he was lying in the sun or the shade of the cherry tree. I hope he finds himself in such a place, if dogs get that chance. Or he reappears as some other dog and bites my hand when I try to pet him. I’ll take either scenario. Bark on G. by @eghayward
