when 할머니 and 할아버지 passed, i was afraid of their absence on this earth, numerous unanswered questions and my incomplete understanding of being korean. in may, we returned them to their homeland as andrew and i experienced our first journey to the motherland with our 엄마. i instantly felt like i had come home, home to a place i had longed for, embraced by the loving arms of family and endless banchan. this trip marked a new stage of grief; a time of rebirth, connection, happiness and second chances.

as genocide and occupation at the very hands of the us continues to destroy familial histories, memories and homelands, i am reminded of the privilege and fleeting nature of this type of pilgrimage and ceremony. i am so incredibly grateful for a place to reunite with ancestors and family for the first time. and i continue to dream of ways that we can rebuild and co-create these possibilities for people with no recognizable motherland or space to process endless grief.

sweet, sweet 한국 i will see you again very soon ❀*♡ taken in 한국 by @egoids
