Officially Doctor eimi now 🎓

I successfully defended my dissertation yesterday after seven years of study and research~
I am endlessly grateful to all the incredible artists I had the chance to meet and write about through this project, and to my dissertation committee for getting me across the finish line. And to the milieu of generous professors, curators, gallerists, administrators, publishers, writers, activists, and researchers who opened doors, opportunities, and pathways of thought for me along the way. I could not have achieved this without my wonderfully kind and supportive advisor at NYU, Tom Looser. His encouragement throughout the program started all the way back in 2018 when we visited NYC from Stockholm for a meeting with him about the application process.

The biggest sappy love and gratitude to TJ for being with me for every moment, from supporting my decision to start the program and move our lives to NYC, to marrying me in the middle of it, and always holding it down during my research trips across the world and absurdly late nights. you are forever my rock, my 相棒 through 絶望 🙏🏼

HUGE thanks to all my family and friends for showing up for me in every possible way over the past years and my apologies for all the overposting as this process has come to an end but i am so happy and proud

i might try and post some of my research pics in the months to come now that the work is owari and i am freeeeee

I first encountered the legendary Mao Ishikawa’s photographs about twelve years ago as a yung college student, and they are one of the reasons i started to be curious about Okinawa and the ongoing US military occupation there.

This essay was an honor and a joy to write. Ishikawa-san is an incredible woman with such power and presence. It’s labeled as an interview, but it’s not — really its just me drooling over her photobooks, tracing her existing interviews, and amalgamating scholarly work about her in my attempt to capture her staunch spirt of refusal as it comes out in her photos (srsly check them footnotes!).

Her work is on view in NYC at @alisonbradleyprojects through june! Don’t miss it! Big thanks to the gallery, @impulse_magazine_ for publishing, and massive love for everyone who supported my research trip to Okinawa in 2024, plus all the okinawa soba, こーれーぐーす, and orion i consumed while i was there~

the history of US territorial holdings (read: colonies!) are hardly taught here, cuz empire sure loves to keep us dumb. Ishikawa’s photos show the longevity of occupation, and slaps us in the face with our own lack of awareness.

finally getting around to a 2025 round up 🥂
it was def a chaotic year, but full of meaningful shifts, squeezes, color, and joy. unpacking here in the screen world to think about how lucky i was this year despite all that’s wrong in the world

Started with a research trip to australia, guam, and hawai‘i—cyanotyped in @haji_tesusabi’s workshop in sydney, tracked US military fences across guam, and scoped HT25 in honolulu with my mama. Spent precious time w @k.dalay learning mahjong in brooklyn, then taught it to @alvinsphotodump when he flew in from Denmark. Teej soaked up a big joint bday for the books, surrounded by friends, music, and love 🎈

Finally got the chance to collab with the sweetest ceramic artist-to-watch @miwaclay, and curated @mgodoynieto’s shadow garden solo show with my beloved babe @mona.maisonmono. Also had the chance to witness the awe of @kuniesugiurastudio’s opening at SF MoMA ✨

Second half of the year we gave a big sloppy goodbye to nyc with all our best friends before moving our asses to san francisco. Brought our niece and nephew to Japan for the first time, where i also met @mkobayash’s beautiful new baby in tokyo (peep @motoyukishitamichi’s photo at the mori). @tokyoartsandspace curatorial residency led me to Aichi Triennale, where i stumbled on a 7th-generation seto potter still making 馬の目 (scream!). Cooked a meal for my Obaachan in the same house where i spent my childhood summers. Got to watch the dream scenario unfold of @pfr_nyc’s growth this year, including seeing my beloved hubz DJing at public records. Hopped over to maine to catch the shimmering portraits and stories collected by the talented @giselamcdaniel, and got to love on my soul sister @ghoshridethewhip’s woven photographs of immigrants in nyc 🙏🏼

Saw my family as much as possible here, there and everywhere. Bitter sweetest goodbye to my childhood dog Bibi, the princess of my heart after 17 years of sassy living, but still closed out the year glittering at @jrickk & @raw_and_order_’s gorgeous wedding ❣️

thank you everyone

It was so special to curate @mgodoynieto’s beautiful new works in ‘De La Sombra, un Jardín’ with @mona.maisonmono at Maison Mono this summer. The exhibition is on view every day through July 21! ♡
Thanks to all who came to see her beautiful, rhythmic performance at the opening and all who have come through since! scroll all the way for some installation antics and our initial studio visit when we were blown away by the two new series Melissa just made in Mexico and Italy.

This collab really captured my heart. The way it came together was just so thoroughly brooklyn — I met Melissa when I sublet her studio space in bedstuy in the heat of summer in 2023 after being referred by a friend that bought an artwork from her directly on the subway. From the moment i walked down the stairs into her whimsical, colorful space I knew I wanted to do a project together. I learned about how she’d been actively making gorgeous textile and mixed media works in NYC for the past 15+ years, consistently teasing out a lasting narrative in her work about women’s relationship with nature, climate, labor, and mythology, especially in regard to her native Mexico. Textile, long undervalued as a marker of feminine “craft”and domesticity, should be canonized as a practice that is both contemporary and tied to a rich heritage of makers from around the world. With a combination of sewing, stitching, and collage, Melissa creates tapestries from upcycled materials that would otherwise be discarded. She also paints, creating pigments from soils collected while traveling, and occasionally holds the brush with her left hand in reference to her mother.

The works on view are beautiful and bright, but have darker conceptual undertones informed by the artist’s research residencies in Sinaloa, Mexico, and Puglia, Italy.
Hence the title of the exhibition — from the shadow, a garden. Enjoy 🥀

Big thanks to the @maison.mono cuties and @takuyaikezaki for being the best install team ever, and to @pfr_nyc, @eliarata_ and @nigelatope for the opening tunes 🥰 taken in Maison Mono by @eimitagtag

DE LA SOMBRA, UN JARDÍN
From the Shadow, a Garden
June 7 – July 21, 2025

Maison Mono presents a solo exhibition by Brooklyn-based artist Melissa Godoy Nieto, whose work blends textile, collage, paint, and performance.
Drawing from her roots in Mexico and her time in New York and Italy, she explores themes of land, memory, and nature.

On view are two new series:
	•	Amapolas, inspired by the poppy flower’s beauty and its ties to the landscape of Sinaloa.
	•	Olivos y Tarantismo, large textile works made in southern Italy, exploring dance and healing rituals.

Through natural pigments and woven materials, Godoy Nieto creates a dreamlike garden that reflects both transformation and connection to place.

Join us at Maison Mono and Lentol Garden to experience a vibrant celebration of art, community, and nature in the heart of Greenpoint. taken in Greenpoint by @eimitagtag

𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸, 𝘢 𝘨𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯

Opening - June 7th, 2025 5:30-9:30pm
(Performance at Lentol Garden at 6pm)

Maison Mono x Lentol Garden
150 Bayard St, Brooklyn, NY

Curated and organized by Eimi Tagore @eimitagtag and Mona Kim @mona.maisonmono

Join us to celebrate the solo exhibition of Brooklyn-based artist Melissa Godoy Nieto at Maison Mono, in collaboration with our neighbors here in Greenpoint, the beautiful Lentol Garden. Enjoy sunshine, music and Melissa’s live painting in the garden until sunset, and finish out the evening in the gallery to celebrate the start of her 6-week summer show!

Melissa’s work in 𝘋𝘦 𝘭𝘢 𝘚𝘰𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘢, 𝘶𝘯 𝘑𝘢𝘳𝘥í𝘯 features two new mixed media and textile series: ‘Amapolas’ and ‘Olivos y Tarantismo.’ Drawing from her roots in Sinaloa, Mexico, and a recent residency spent in southern Italy, the artist’s works explore the entanglement of nature, myth, and memory. ‘Amapolas’ reflects on the beauty and darkness of the poppy flower in Sinaloa’s cultural landscape, while ‘Olivos y Tarantismo’ draws on the legend of tarantismo, where dance becomes feminine healing and release. Moving between shadow and growth, the artist’s works playfully welcome us into a garden that can be both history and mythology.

The opening party is a community collaboration with our next door neighbor, @lentolgarden Lentol Garden—where the artist will present her live painting performance. Her works will be on view from June 7 - July 21. taken in Maison Mono by @eimitagtag

There is exactly one month left to see ‘Unwind’ at @maison.mono in greenpoint! finally had the chance to work with Miwa Neishi (@miwaclay), one of my favorite artists based here in brooklyn. this serene show is a curatorial collaboration with the amazing Mona Kim (@mona.maisonmono). it has been a privilege and joy to work with Miwa to bring her ceramic sculptures into conversation with a series of beautiful paintings by Daniel Park (@blurppppppppppppppppppppp) and a video installation by Sana Maqsood (@smaqattack).

I have been drawn to Miwa’s playful, hand-built vessels ever since i worked on a group show that included her ceramics a few years back—her keen attention to texture and color, and the way she cleverly incorporates fragments of japanese calligraphy into each piece, even down to the direction of her brushstrokes while glazing. I felt so lucky to get to tag along with Miwa’s creative process as she made a large new work specifically for the show. what a dream! 😌🙏🏼

Unwind is up until May 25—if you’re in Brooklyn def don’t miss it, and lmk if you’d like a little tour! we will prbly have a closing party so keep an eye out~

ps i am sorry for my lack of posting here lately (always), werkin on it but life just keeps rolling on 🫨 taken in Maison Mono by @eimitagtag
