Hello instagram, it’s been awhile and I wish I had something much more lighthearted to share instead of this. For those of you who don’t know, September is suicide awareness month, a month means to highlight the issue that often gets overlooked; that being how many men in the United States lose their lives by suicide every year. The numbers are staggering. Men make up the overwhelming majority of suicide deaths, and too many grow up believing they have to deal with everything alone, when the truth is they don’t. My father, Marvin Foster, did not die of a heart attack, the truth is Marvin Foster chose to take his own life and hung himself during the evening of January the 22nd. Over the last few months a particular story has been facilitated in regard to my father’s premature death. At his services it was told that Marvin Foster lost his life due to a heart attack but that is not true. Whoever I may alienate by telling this I’ll let you know I truly do not care. I’m not sharing this for sympathy, and I’m not going to pretend we had the kind of relationship people imagine when they hear the word “father.” He was not a good person to me or any of my siblings. He was a cruel man in life to all of his children and was completely absent from all our lives. However that doesn’t mean I won’t give him a minuscule semblance of dignity that I feel every person deserves. Reaching out for help isn’t weakness. Talking to someone, asking for support, or admitting you’re struggling is far better than suffering in silence. If you’re going through something, there are people who will listen and people who care about whether you make it through. Suicide does not end the pain, it just transfers it to those that love you. Reach out so someone because they care; reach out to me, because I care. by @eiyazhfoster
