Victor Perez, VFX artist and supervisor, discussed with EIZO his role within the filmmaking process and what goes into building realistic worlds.

“Visual effects are usually thought to be done in post-production. Of course, in post is where you see the results; however, those effects need to be designed and planned to serve the story.””Part of my job is to translate the director’s vision into artistic and technically specific instructions, so all departments are on the same page and working in the same direction.”

“Then comes the question: “How can we ‘film’ this?” and make it look, not only believable but photorealistic in accordance with the style of the rest of the film. You have to understand technical questions like what camera, lenses, lights and environmental conditions are going to be used, then more artistic and subtle questions as character, style, narrative and purpose of the project, the sequence and the shot… all of that, of course, before anybody else comes on board so you are ready.”

Clive Booth: The instinctive nature of photography

Cameras can freeze time in thousands of a second, but the action of getting ready to be in the right place at the right time, with the camera set exactly right and then pressing the button, takes years of practice to be able to do it consistently. Young and inexperienced photographers may be able to do it sometimes, but the experts will be able to do it again and again, because they will have developed that instinctive nature. The instinctive nature of photography is one element alongside the technical requirement of using the camera, but Clive’s ability to observe, emphasise and engage with his subjects really stands out to me.

Why a colour-managed workflow matters

With a good colour management system in place, you can be confident that you’re making the correct edits and your prints or videos always look good. It cuts down on back-and-forth revisions (including multiple test prints), avoids unpleasant surprises at the final stage and gives you more control over how your work is seen.

Your computer monitor is at the heart of all this. It’s your reference point, and if it’s not accurate, nothing else will be either.

But a great monitor is only as good as its calibration. Over time, all monitors drift, which means colours shift slightly, brightness levels change, and what once was accurate slowly becomes less so. Because these changes happen gradually, we don’t tend to see them. That’s why calibration isn’t a one-off job. It should be part of your regular routine, ideally once a week when the monitor is new, then monthly after it stabilises.

This International Cat Day, we wanted to highlight Tim Flach’s recent work.

For Tim, photographing cats isn’t just about capturing animals; it’s about decoding a mirror we hold up to ourselves. “What is it that we like about them?” he muses. “Cats do what they want to do. Maybe that’s something many of us find more appealing than a dog waiting to be fed or taken for walkies.”

Cats, unlike their canine counterparts, possess a quiet autonomy – an evolutionary aloofness that intrigues and divides. But Tim isn’t looking to take sides in the age-old cat-versus-dog debate. Rather, he sees felines as a rich lens through which to explore our own impulses, affections, and the very psychology of attachment.
