$Caelith, the man of my dreams. Literally 😂 When I imagined him I really did picture a mixture of Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Sombr and Jacob Elordi. He’s morally grey for sure, but he has his reasons. His best, and worst, trait is that he takes on other people’s pain, despite his own. He carries it because he’s decided that he deserves it and sometimes it’s heartbreaking. I didn’t want to write a character with just a secret. I wanted to write one whose best quality was the part that was ruining him. red remains by @abbyidraper - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

red remains is a short, strange, beautifully unsettling debut, and it’s unlike any horror I’ve read.

Abby I. Draper alternates short poems with prose chapters. The poems, written in the third person, show what the narrator can’t admit, and the first-person chapters that follow quietly smooth it over. The gap between the two is where the horror lives, and watching the truth leak through is very creepy (in a good way if you’re a horror fan!)

For me, the poetry is the highlight. The imagery is vivid and grounded in ordinary things: a blender, a woodworking shop, a garden spade, a bowl of strawberry ice cream. That makes the violence underneath hit even harder. Lines like “She is a spade. / Not the card suit, / the shovel” were very effective. I enjoyed the author’s small, clever trick of bracketed words standing in for something darker, and it says a lot about how the mind protects itself.

Kelsey Speer’s illustrations deserve their own praise. They’re moody greyscale sketches with hollow-eyed figures, and they add so much to the spooky atmosphere.

Under the eeriness, this is really a story about grief, isolation and a controlling relationship that looks like devotion. Although it’s a short read, it’s enough to linger. Recommended for fans of poetic, atmospheric horror.

Gothic is my favourite theme in any book, film or TV show. One of my all time favourites is “The Woman in Black” (even though it absolutely terrifies me) and so I thought I knew it all. When writing a more gothic romantasy book, I realised there’s more to it than just dread and horror.
