I have always been interested by the story of “Dalem Balingkang”. The figures of Barong Landung, such as “Jero Gede/Sri Jaya Pangus and Kang Ching Wie”, have been a great source of inspiration for me. This inspiration eventually transforms into the creation of two large scroll paintings.

Hand drawn with markers on Kamasan canvas, the paintings feature motifs inspired by Balinese Prada ornaments and Lokcan patterns from Lasem, Central Java, Indonesia.

The paintings celebrate the cultural harmony between the Balinese and Chinese traditions, reflecting their deep and lasting influence on Balinese culture. It is a reflection of my appreciation to my roots and heritage.

These pictures also celebrate the classic imagery of Bali in the past, capturing its timeless essence.

Who is allowed to carry a tradition forward?

For five centuries the village of Kamasan in Klungkung has painted Bali’s classical wayang, and the right to that line is said to run in the family. It hasn’t always. The three artists in this session each came to the line from a different starting point, and each has taken it somewhere it had not been.

On 2 October, join us for KAMASAN Artist Talk: Entering the Tradition from the Edge. Curator Farah Wardani with artists Mangku Muriati, Ida Bagus Eka Suta Harunika and Eka Mardiys, moderated by Marlowe Bandem, on where the Kamasan line lives today, from palace ceiling to tattoo.

The afternoon opens with a curator-led walk through the KAMASAN exhibition, then moves to the Auditorium for the conversation.

Selama lima abad, seni lukis Kamasan diwariskan lintas generasi, sementara para perupa terus menemukan cara baru untuk memasuki dan menafsirkan bahasa visualnya.

If you think Kamasan is just “old Balinese painting,” look closer.

@sakamuseum’s first temporary exhibition, KAMASAN: The Noble Tradition of Balinese Painting, is looking at what happens when a centuries-old tradition keeps moving.

Originating in Kamasan, Klungkung, the style flourished under the 16th-century Gelgel royal court and became closely connected to Balinese-Hindu religion, mythology, folklore and cosmology.

But this exhibition isn’t only about looking back.
SAKA brings historical Kamasan works together with contemporary pieces by a new generation of artists, exploring identity, ecology, technology and even memories of the pandemic through a visual language that has been passed down for generations.

The exhibition also looks at the women of Kamasan, including @mangkumuriati, as well as artists such as @eka_sutha and @ekamardiys, who are finding new ways to work with Kamasan’s inherited visual conventions.

And that’s what makes this worth adding to your Bali art list.
Because culture doesn’t stay alive by staying exactly the same.

Sometimes, it survives by being reinterpreted.
