Ok.

Okay. I’d never locked eyes with a fox before.
Not like that.
Not in Paris.
Not here.
And now I get what it does to you inside.

Asleep against the stone, as if dreaming of a far-off forest.

OBSERVATION.
This most diminutive Creature, stiled the Kinglet for the fiery mark it bears upon its head, possesses an unparalleled liveliness. It is the least of all birds in our climes.
Contrary to its usual habits, which incline it never to forsake the high Pine boughs, this specimen was observed coursing upon the sepulchral stones. Like a small Sovereign inspecting his domains, he paced the cold marble with singular audacity, bringing the brilliance of his crown into the empire of shadows.

Eurasian Jay · Geai des chênes (Garrulus glandarius)

🇬🇧 EN
📍 Recorded in Paris, Père-Lachaise cemetery. A jay was vocalizing very softly a
few metres from another jay: long, rambling, whispered phrases.

🗣 Subsong is exactly that. A quiet, highly variable song, produced outside full
song. Young birds use it to learn, adults to rehearse, pairs to murmur to each
other.

📢 Contact calls are the short notes birds exchange to keep track of a partner
or a group when they can't see one another.

🎭 Jays are among the best mimics in Europe, and tiny imitations slip into this
murmur. The buzzard is their classic one.

🔈 You rarely hear any of it: subsong carries only a few metres. You have to
already be standing there.

👉 Subsong, mimicry, contact calls? What do you hear?

🇫🇷 FR

⸻

🇬🇧 People ask if going back to the same place ever gets repetitive. You already know this broken wing: it is the intriguing profile picture of @la_vie_au_cimetiere, with a great tit on the exit. This week a treecreeper came instead, searching the stone the way it searches bark, a few seconds, then gone.

The place repeats. What lives in it does not.

📷 Canon EOS R7

📍 Paris 20e
A brief stop on a wooden post and a vintage bicycle. Is this Black Redstart an old cyclist coming back to inspect the frame, or simply a relentless hunter taking advantage of human metal? Originally a dweller of high alpine cliffs, this bird views handlebars, pedals, and fence posts as perfect artificial crags. Before pouncing on small insects on the ground, it constantly vibrates its rusty tail, a nervous visual signal designed to test its surroundings and keep potential competitors at a distance.

Black Redstart | Rougequeue noir | Phoenicurus ochruros

A discrete guardian on the massive Hertford-Wallace sepulcher. 🐦🌱 This stunning monument is the final resting place of Sir Richard Wallace (1818–1890). A true philanthropist, he is famous for donating the iconic green "Wallace fountains" 💧 to Paris in 1872, providing free drinking water to a city lacking it after the Franco-Prussian War. Today, these ornate cast-iron fountains are symbols of the French capital. 🌿 For the "petrophile" (rock-loving) Black Redstart 🪨, originally from high mountain cliffs, this monumental stone structure is an ideal urban substitute for its natural habitat. It loves to surveil its territory from this vantage point while searching for tiny insects hidden in the carved moss. 🍃

This proud little silhouette standing on the edge of the monument is the Black Redstart. A true child of the cliffs, it has found a perfect substitute for its ancestral rocky home among the stone sepulchers of Père Lachaise. Having spent the spring in its company, you surely noticed its unique habit of shivering its rusty red tail every time it alights. Its song is a mechanical marvel: a brief melodic phrase followed by a strange, unmistakable scratching sound, like crushed paper or a sharp acoustic friction. It is a tireless performer that turns the mineral quiet of the cemetery into its personal amphitheater.
