Just out, my article: “My artwork about censorship was just censored: now what?” in the June issue of @theardentlb — Now what? We band together and fight like hell. Alongside my studio practice, I have been a tireless advocate for artists since my early twenties. This has been (mostly) invisible work and taken many forms, from organizing international art exchanges with some of my favorite artists like @lauralima________ to recovering over 650 stolen artworks for groundbreaking LA artists who were part of the Artist Pension Trust like @carolyn_castano_studio.

I view my advocacy on behalf of artists as a natural extension of my purpose as an artist/human/citizen/mother, to encourage and amplify flourishing of all kinds. Artists are visionaries, change-makers and healers, but they are at the bottom of the totem pole of power in the (art) world. I labor every day to shift this dynamic.

As a part of this practice, I have been working for the past three years with the sages @altereddaily and @virginiabroersma to offer the "Guggenheim Application Cohort." This project doesn't just help artists apply to one of the most prestigious and cumbersome awards in the US, but forges skills, community and empowerment for the participants. (And between the three of us, we have helped 15 artists secure the Gugg!) Registration is open through June 15. @artfaxd thanks for posting a clip of my video “Ass on the street” from 2009. I couldn’t see out of the taxiderm donkey head at all— so the fear, the discomfort and the awkwardness was real. A group of neighborhood kids harassed me, I tripped on some broken glass and I transformed into a clown. This was during the Recession, when I had moved into a gentrifying neighborhood of LA called Echo Park. I was forced to confront my own identity, gentrification, colonialism and whiteness. I was (and still am) thinking about my role as an artist, human and citizen. Shortly after making this, I started to study Pauline Oliveros’ deep listening technology/artwork, which helped me became a community organizer and activist. "Hive Mind," a new public art proposal: a honeycomb-shaped sonic sculpture, designed to magnify the sounds of plants, humans, animals, and insects. "Hive Mind" will be interactive and encourage park goers to tune into natural beauty through a heightened sense of sound and bodily awareness. The sculpture will build a strong connection to nature and promote the development of meaningful environmental stewardship. The piece will also highlight the importance of bees at a time when their familiar buzzing is less and less frequently heard due to massive die-offs. Through play and participation "Hive Mind" will create a space of deep eco-listening: only when we truly let in the sounds of the natural world can we hear the urgent call to climate action.

This proposal was inspired by a rare antique hearing aid from the 1800s that I discovered in my research into the history of listening technologies.

To create this public art proposal I did a deep dive into how bees work collectively and was blown away by pictures of festooning!
