Staring at my little sweetheart as I drank my morning cuppa ☕️ The truth about having a dog?

They need structure, predictability, and someone willing to understand their needs even when they can’t verbally communicate them.

I work two full-time jobs (sales + women’s rugby), so my days are unpredictable. I’m lucky to WFH, but that doesn’t mean my dog’s needs are automatically met.

Choppy is incredibly smart and needy. When I’m in meetings or locked in on work, he’ll start doing things just to get my attention. At first, it was frustrating. So I paid closer attention.

What I’ve learned:

• Enrichment toys help, but sometimes increase his neediness.

• Short walks help—unless he can’t sniff one spot long enough and gets frustrated.

• Long walks get boring and aren’t always realistic during work hours.

• Cuddles calm him, but don’t satisfy his prey/play drive. Too much slow time = pent-up energy.

What seems to work every time:

• 10–15 minutes of “homework” (his commands from class).

It gives him purpose, builds our bond, regulates his nervous system, and helps him settle. So I take breaks and we do homework.

When we do commands, he relaxes, gives me space, and usually chooses to rest in his crate.

Commands don’t check every box but with the right mix, they create safety, connection, and calm.

Now I incorporate enrichment toys as an activity I can supervise and encourage him to do so he doesn’t associate his fun activity with forced distance from me.

Structure isn’t boring.
For some dogs, it’s everything 🐾
