'WICKED CHANGES Vl': Meanwhile
10 Years Back in Hackney Wick' (exhibition)

FEATURE: GRAHAM DUNCAN ELDER

‘ECHOES OF URBAN SPRING’, 2025

27cm x 122cm

Acrylic, Oil, Gloss, and Emulsion on wood panel

This work is influenced by the atmosphere of my immediate environment. In the springtime, the sounds of traffic, street revelry, and music fill my garden, infusing my process with a sense of excitement that I translate onto the surface. This composition reflects an engagement with the passage of time and the vibrancy of urban life. My gestural marks point towards graffiti art, but do not use words or letters; instead, the black shapes running horizontally across the panel are free expressions in form. Years ago, I painted on street walls; therefore, I was aware of the potential for trouble from other people, but alone in my garden, I am more relaxed. The comfort of one's own property allows the painting to evolve without 3rd-party eyes or interference, returning to it again and again without defacement. I've added different paints in layers to achieve a blend of surface sheens and shines with a variety of textural finishes. The orange in the work is similar in tone to the orange bricks of the garden wall, which pulsed in the Spring sunshine. Touches of green inspired by the lawn beneath my feet; yet, the painting has one foot in the past, as the area around my art studio on White Post Lane, Hackney Wick, has had a profound effect on my painting. 18 years of feeling the energy and seeing the urban district transform have left an imprint on the way I paint with gestural freedom.
