All Signs Point to Stockton: this poem has been my staple poem as Poet Laureate. And is published in the Stockton Anthology Published by @tuleburgpress It’s about the resilience and grit of the people who live here and how I came to be the person I am. Despite its flaws, I am PROUD to be from Stockton, CA.

Journey to 8 weeks postpartum. (long post scroll go read)
If this post has taught me anything it’s that birthing my daughter has slowly turned me into a minimalist. Okay, not really…more like minimal-adjacent. The way I’ve had to simplify everything in my life.

My wardrobe, my hairstyles, no jewelry (except one necklace I wear with Aura’s name when I’m away from her), my schedules and the things I say “yes” to. Weekly walks are like mini vacations that break up the monotony. Learning simple things all over again and no longer taking them for granted.

Things like showers, driving, eating and of course sleeping are all different. I’m still a night owl but now I’ve suddenly joined this exclusive club of morning people. Talking to people is different, shopping is different, I read physical books again, the way I think is different.

I’m forced to sloooooooow down. I’m needed every 2 hours by this tiny little angel who relies on my body for her food, her comfort, her reset, her regulation. I’m just now learning that I need all of those things too.

I’ve never been great at taking care of myself- in fact I’ve caused more harm to myself than anyone walking this earth I’m sure. But now, I’m learning just how imperative it is that I take care of me in order to keep taking care of her.

Milk dries up without eating well and staying hydrated, I’m less patient when I’m not taking time to rest, I’m more withdrawn and anxious if I don’t take care of my mental health.

For the first time someone depends on me fully. What I do and when I do it matters more than it ever has before. What a scary and exhausting privilege that is.

She doesn’t expect perfection, thank God, so I’m learning to surrender that unrealistic expectation I hold myself to. Im learning to release impossible standards, of my mind, my use of time, how I think my body should look.

While this body feels like a stranger to me, with lose skin and new body marks (I literally have new moles/skin tags on my face from the hormones of pregnancy and postpartum)

I will get to know her better everyday, I will learn to love her more than I ever did before.

Because she is me.
