she was never one body - pt ii

introducing the artists : @eleanormaycox

Eleanor Cox (b. 1997, UK) grew up in Devon before moving to London to study her BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins.

Her works are meditations on the limits of looking as an attempt to get to know or understand something/someone other. With an interest in utopian thinking, Cox’s practice considers methods of communication - linguistic or bodily - and how one may find possibilities of ‘collapse’. Suggesting the body as a queer and precarious meeting point, where leaking occurs and movement is essential.

A GAME OF FLATS by @eleanormaycox [K♥️]

Among us London Dykes, we have many writers, poets & wordsmiths…

Eleanor Cox, our King ♥️, wrote an essay that is published as part of the London Dyke Deck. It explores the social disruptions enabled by card games, the agency of the self portrait, and a nod to the dialogue between @csopie and @ellenkydd as dyke photographers.

Read the full essay as part of the London Dyke Deck publication, available via londondyke.com & in store at @gaysthewordbookshop by @eleanormaycox

“Playing cards can tell a story or erect a mirror far more critical than expected. They show us how to pay attention, to gather fragments of information needed... to play cards is, in part, to practise the art of coming to know and interpret other people.” – @eleanormaycox

Just launched last week at @thephotographersgallery, the London Dyke Deck features 54 photographic portraits of the city’s queer community. Created in dialogue with Catherine Opie’s original card deck from 1995, which documented the San Francisco scene, El has brought together today’s dykes across different ages, genders, races and social backgrounds. Cathy and El both feature as the Jokers in the deck, while the four suits represent different indicators of identity: femme, butch, trans and non-binary ♥️♠️♦️♣️

Here are a few shots of the deck, some of the other friends featured, and a crop of Narcissus and Strap On, both featured in BLEACH.

The deck is available to purchase at londondyke.com or via the link in @thelondondyke’s bio ⛓️🃏 by @eleanormaycox

This week’s #Spotlight is Eleanor Cox.

Eleanor Cox is a multidisciplinary artist whose work draws inspiration from sound, installation, and sculpture, gravitating toward work that embraces ambiguity and emotional depth.

Her practice explores power, scale, and the politics of feeling through a female and Femme perspective. Cox has quickly gained recognition through selling works at MoreySmith art fairs and winning the Saatchi Rising Art Star Award.

Eleanor Cox’s Champion is Linda Morey-Burrows. Morey-Burrows is founder of MoreySmith, a London-based RIBA chartered interior and architectural practice. She is also the founder of StudioMorey, a stand-alone practice focusing purely on private residential properties.
