♡ Chapter VI. Dead Again ♡

I fell in love with this album straight away. Its sound first and foremost, before I’d even uncovered the meaning behind it or its personal significance to Peter.

These Three Things was the first song that blew me away so much I felt compelled to share it with the world. 😂 I remember posting about it on Threads, before I became active on Instagram, and a few people joined me in appreciating ✨the riffs✨. They never fail to make my breath catch.

On several occasions, I’ve tried to comment my favourite tracks from the album under other people’s posts, only to get frustrated with myself because I inevitably end up listing nearly all of them. 😂 A very good problem to have when it comes to music.

Some time ago, I mentioned that September Sun was actually the first Type O song I ever came across, and that it hit me right in the feels so hard I wasn’t sure I’d be able to listen to the band.

I clearly underestimated myself. 🙂‍↕️💅

Tripping a Blind Man and She Burned Me Down have a particularly special place in my heart because of their lyrics.

The title track feels like care to me - Peter warning us against substance abuse, encouraging us to learn from his mistakes instead of our own.

I’ve always been a big fan of the intro to Hail And Farewell To Britain, but a couple of weeks ago I came to fall in love with the song completely. It took experiencing the kind of person who tries to make you doubt yourself in their sneaky ways. But I am smarter. 😌

“Don’t act so surprised, saw through you disguise.
But with friends like you prefer my enemies.

Up until recently never had a clue,
In a way I must admit I pity you.”

And every track flows into the next so beautifully. I love listening to this album from beginning to end.

So, to conclude this album journey series: I’ve loved individual songs from every Type O record from day one, but only Slow, Deep and Hard and Dead Again grew on me immediately.

And I think that’s the beauty of it. I had the chance to explore, discover, and gradually fall in love. Just like falling in love with a real person. This music feels *that* alive to me. It was a slow-burn kind of story. 🥰 by @electrocuteness

♡From the interview with Lesa Pence, 2000.♡

How’s your mother?

Peter: She’s doing okay, and I say “okay” in that she’s not getting any worse. I try to spend time with her and cheer her up, and talk about nice things, or funny things, or old memories, you know. Because I don’t know how much time I have left. She’s 78, and I learned from my father’s dеаth, and even though he’s dеаd 5 years, it still feels like it happened yesterday. There are so many questions I had for him that I wished I had asked him, like where was his first date, or how did he feel about my mother when he first met her, you know, things like that.
So you know, now I make sure that I spend time with my mother, having learned this lesson from my father. I try to spend time with her every day. If she needs me to do something around the house, I don’t even think twice. I do it out of my love for her. It sounds disgustingly Christian, but you think if a person goes through his or her life asking the question of ‘what would make me truly happy’ and I think that I’ve found the answer. I’m happiest when I’m making the people I care about happy.

Peter had such a big heart, oh my.🥺💔 I imagine how hard it must be to stay patient and composed while your own heart is breaking. But he was strong for his mama. Their bond was so beautiful.

Hit Parader. August, 2003.

Type O Negative: To D!e For. By Randy Smith.

This article left a bit of a bitter aftertaste.🥺 Not because it irritated me, but because despite the repeated emphasis on Peter’s “razor-edged sense of humor” combined with “finely-honed sense of tragedy,” I couldn’t help but hear his frustration between the lines.

I think Peter was never 100% comfortable with the idea of publicity and fame, especially given how unapologetically himself he was (and rightly so). But I also think he was the kind of person who wanted to excel in whatever he invested his time and energy, whether that was working for the Parks Department or making music.

Ans this is exactly the approach Peter and the boys had to each of the records. That, along with how tight-knit their fanbase was and still is, it is perfectly valid to have wanted more recognition. Wanting your life’s work to be rewarded isn’t vanity. If anyone deserved to live comfortably doing what they loved, it was Peter.❤️‍🩹

♡Chapter V. Life Is K!lling Me♡

I wanted to start with a little cross-reference here. During BK week, I mentioned that I see these two albums as some of their most diverse mood-wise, but LIKM feels more “grown up”, because by the time it was released, Peter had experienced even more of life and everything that comes with it.

And similarly to WCD, I avoided listening to this album in excess for a while because of just how heavy-hearted it gets in places. There are certain songs on it that wreck my soul, Anesthesia and, even more so, Nettie.❤️‍🩹

“A victim of the curse of empathy, her reward for compassion is to suffer.
Nettie, no need to cry. Let me wipe those tear drops from your eyes.”

Surprisingly, I Don’t Wanna Be Me wasn’t the first song I heard from the record. I only learned how popular it was from a YouTube video about the band’s history and legacy. It’s such a crowd-pleaser of a song with killer riffs, so I can completely see why it makes such a good introduction to the band.

The first two songs I got into were IYDKMIGTHTKY and… I Like Goils. (This one just makes me grin.:D) God bless sorting by date downloaded on Apple Music.😂

I went through a heavy obsession with How Could She? last year. I love how soft Peter’s voice sounds singing all those character names, and then how the song transitions into almost hardcore genre at the bridge. Nobody did layers quite like Type O.

This year, I cannot get enough of Angry Inch. I love the high tempo, and there’s a certain richness and fullness to Peter’s voice on it… on this whole record, in all fairness.

The title track also blows me away every time. To me, it’s a perfect balance of the sardonic and the wounded.

And of course… (We Were) Electrocute.🥹 This song is soaked in nostalgia for the love gone, but that last line sends me every time.:D It’s also an incredibly pleasant song to sing along to.

And, well, this is the whole uncomplicated story behind my username! I considered referencing other songs: MGG, Pyretta Blaze, Christian Woman, Summer Girl... I wanted something feminine. But I also felt that some of those options might suggest the wrong vibe for me.😂

I intended to leave this post short and sweet, but my tangents know no end. I present to you - thought du jour.😂

Today, while listening to Everything Diеs, I realised that one of the many reasons I love Type O is that there has always been something poetic and whimsical about their music.

It feels like the boys never tried to sound heavy just for the sake of it, or to fit themselves into a particular genre or bracket.

They were heavy when it felt right. They were melodic when it felt right.

I think this is what’s so refreshing about this band to this day.💚

Hard n’ Heavy (Canada?). Circa 1999.

Scan and translation by TypeONegativeCanada on Reddit.

Peter on potential retirement:
“There is nothing more left for me. I don’t like the stage and even less like to be away from the house.”

On World Coming Down (Creepy Green Light, All Hallows Eve & White Slavery):

“There will be different stories. One is about a dеаd woman that comes back to see her husband, the other about a man who gets attacked on Halloween and another, autobiographical, related to ❄️.”

I thought it was nice and fitting to share this today. Journalists often asked Peter about Christian Woman, MGG, and the songs that challenged general western views at the time, while I feel like the songs mentioned in this article are spoken about much less.

♡ Chapter IV. World Coming Down ♡

I have to admit that, until perhaps last year, I had been avoiding this album. Not that I’d never listened to the songs, but I’d always struggled to listen to the whole thing.

[Okay, Sinus, Liver and Lung still make me feel deeply unsettled, which was the intent, in all fairness. I can simply confirm that it was successful. 😂😭]

And I think it’s because of just how heavy this record is in an emotional sense. I used to, and still do, feel heartache for Peter while listening to the majority of the tracks on this album.

I’m very much capable of sitting with my sadness, but when we’re talking about songs like Everyone I Love Is Dead, Everything Dies and World Coming Down, these are heart-wrenching. Certainly no little sad songs. Big sad, mourning songs.

I loved them the first time I heard them, but learning about Peter’s life at the same time quickly made it difficult to listen to them and enjoy them in quite the same way I had without all that context.

I’m happy to report though that I’ve started developing some immunity to them and can enjoy their heaviness and Peter’s incredibly powerful voice on them again. Especially on Everyone I Love Is Dead.
Exposure therapy. 🙈

When it comes to Who Will Save the Sane? and Whitе Slаvеry, it took me a while to fully grasp both songs. My series of lyrical analysis posts at the start of this year really helped me catch onto all those tracks I used to overlook or avoid, and these two were among them.

They feel incredibly vulnerable in the context of his inner struggles, especially those things that could have been under his control, but weren’t.

I also noticed is how much emphasis there seems to be on Peter’s vocals. When I listen to these two tracks, the instrumentals almost become this beautiful background, while Peter’s voice and his words feel so raw that they’re all I can really hear.

Pyretta Blaze and Day Tripper clicked with me instantly. They’re less doom and gloom and more sparkles and bubbles. High energy. Safe songs for Electrocuteness. 😂

And I’ve always seen All Hallows Eve and Creepy Green Light as some sort of dark love-story sequel, which is right up my street. 🥹 by @electrocuteness

♡Happy October [Rust]♡

It’s so beautiful how some songs can make you feel loved when you don’t feel loveable at all.

Sadly, over the past month I’ve experienced three panic attacks. While coming down from the most recent one, I had the chance to put some music on. Peter’s vocals on October Rust are like velvet, and as I was listening to Love You to Death, I noticed towards the end of the song just how much my breathing had evened out.

Thank you, Peter. ❤️‍🩹

Hit Parader, Mar’97.
Caught In The Act by Brad Swain.

♡ Steele’s persona is certainly no act, no mere rock and roll fantasy come-to-life. Rather, it is the physical manifestation of his beliefs and attitudes, many of which may clash with traditional Western cultures and values, but all of which Steele believes in his heart and in his soul.

♡ “I don’t try to force my beliefs down anyone’s throat. But if people ask me what I think, I do tell them...”

♡ With many in the packed house singing right along with Steele’s growled vocals, it was apparent that the group’s occasionally controversial, often amusing, always intriguing tunes had won a hard-earned spot in the collective consciousness of their followers.

♡Chapter III. October Rust♡

Until this year, I had never really had October Rust on heavy rotation, at least not as a complete record. Yes, MGG was my first and forever love but nonetheless.🤫

When I was working on my album analysis series, which feels like ages ago now, I had to study each song in detail, and that was what finally led me to fully appreciate the genius behind this record.

The instrumentals sound enchanted to me, like stars and moonlight reflected in water. And the lyrics, which might be the most important part of a song to me if I had to choose, are like poetry.
72 gorgeous minutes of serenading.

I grew particularly fond of Haunted, and it has become another favourite of mine. “My Goddess Of The Violet Twilight…” has such a powerful visual impact on me. Sonic too. I love Peter’s speaking voice. Imagine if he had recorded an audiobook of romantic poetry.🥹

I also love when he reaches for those low notes, like towards the end of In Praise of Bacchus and throughout Black Sabbath. There is something about that register that affects me deeply.

But songs like Red Water, knowing their connotations and the emotional baggage behind them, were much harder for me to develop an immunity to. There are a few songs like that throughout their discography. Two of them I still cannot really listen to because they make my heart bleed.

I am proud to announce that I can listen to Red Water without necessarily sobbing now😂 but I am yet to conquer Die With Me. It is partly because of its significance to Peter, and partly because of the very personal way I process that song. It is beyond beautiful. Gentle, vulnerable, light and dark at the same time. There is something eternal about it: love strong enough to continue beyond life if all else fails.

My verdict: I am enamoured beyond the point of no return.

I feel like this album resonates with me more than any other, but I didn’t want to admit that to myself for a very long time. I can be a little avoidant in the sense that I tend to run from my own feelings, and being vulnerable with yourself can sometimes be even harder than being vulnerable with another person. But I’m glad I got there in the end.🥹💚 by @electrocuteness
