‘AMANACER’

SPOT is honored to present "AMANACER," a solo exhibition by the globally recognized artist, John Matos, also known as CRASH. This special event marks CRASH's first-ever exhibition in Puerto Rico and features a dynamic series of paintings on both paper and canvas.

A native New Yorker of Puerto Rican heritage, John Matos rose from the city street and subway art scenes of NYC to become an iconic international leader in the urban/contemporary art genre. His distinctive style—characterized by sharp outlines, bold colors, stylized figures, and a dynamic sense of movement—has profoundly influenced successive generations of artists exploring shared experiences, themes, and social challenges.

"We are thrilled to welcome John and deeply honored that he chose SPOT to host this significant exhibition. As lifelong fans, we've watched his extraordinary journey from the street to the global gallery stage," says SPOT's Founder.

Part of the PR and Friends Series

This “Writers Edition” exhibition features artists with a history in graffiti and chronicles their evolution from street artists to gallery artists. The show represents a diverse group of artists: local artists, members of the diaspora, and other friends that have worked with us in the past or have plans with us for the future.

1UP Crew
Mini-Residency, Autumn 2023

It wasn't planned as a mini-residency but two weeks of living together, painting multiple walls and pieces of art, the roll down on SPOT, hit the guest book, and an @spot.visit shoot with PR adventuring, makes it a classic SPOT residency.

1UP CREW are legends. We're honored to have hosted them at our place in Puerto Rico and we would gladly do it again!

Part graffiti, part performance and part contemporary artists, this group of long time collaborators rolls through town and leaves their mark in a big way. And they do it the right way. Making friends, seeking culture and experience, and enjoying every minute of their moments up to that moment they hop on their plane to the next destination…this time Art Basel.

ADM X 1UP

This was an important project for several reasons. First, it demonstrates our concept of inviting recognized international artists to collaborate with our local artists. Secondly, it includes the often maligned and less recognized graffiti artists that got this game started. Lastly, it puts together professional and serious people that want to do great work. The history of this wall and its importance in local urban/contemporary art cannot be overlooked. While it faces one of the few remaining PUN18 pieces, the wall is just as connected to his and ADM’s place in modern San Juan art history.

I had the chance to get to know the ADM CRU over the last years but especially in 2023. I respect their professionalism, range of talent and their desire to achieve. We did the successful “This is Not Graffiti expo”, a few pieces for our pop-up event series at SPOT and now this massive collaboration with 1UP. I've visited their studio multiple times to see recent works and get to know their concepts.

As for 1UP, I've met some before, but I definitely got to know three, twenty year members of this internationally recognized graf crew these past few weeks, living and working beside them. To say they are professional, driven, talented, and overall great people is an understatement. I thoroughly enjoyed watching them work together as a single entity, dipping in and out of every piece, trusting, challenging and pushing each other to do something great.

In fact, both crews demonstrate similar traits of collaboration and trust, and I'm thankful to witness it up close, support and join in whatever way they want. It's this kind of collaboration that keeps me interested and leads to the best work.

It's a good time to add that this project and the others we are working on couldn't have been done without the help and support of both @coquicharities and @sjartepublico. Take a minute and think about what art does for the community. Come over and have a look at our community before-and-after pics, walk by our walls, talk to a tourist that finds our art an attraction of their stay. This is not a mural project!
