SPLIT
Overdue UCLA Senior Capstone Project post created by me and performed with my favorite collaborators @erin.s.co !! I started generating this last summer and was able to dive deep into the choreography process under @willjrawls and @aboylikethat in the @uclawacd department this year!! Please see full video on my YouTube!!

Description: SPLIT is a contemporary and martial arts fused duet inspired by the experience of feeling internally divided as a multiracial person. It is presented through the lens of Yin and Yang: a concept in Chinese philosophy representing two complementary and contrasting forces that are believed to be essential for the balance and harmony of the universe.he dancers embody the choreographers analyzed emotional memories as a half-Peruvian and Japanese person. Developing a mixed identity under structures valuing monoraciality can cause multiracial identities to lose parts of themselves. SPLIT utilizes music from the film “ @everythingeverywheremovie ” and is grounded by the Kung Fu form, Bagua Zhang, which is deeply rooted in Yin and Yang principles. My piece provides relatability to our divided lives and identities outside of race while encouraging the audience to think about the growing multiracial population.
