Forse per guardarsi davvero bisogna, ogni tanto, chiudere gli occhi e aspettare. Come si aspetta una fotografia così intima, che nasce due volte, prima nell’istante in cui la luce entra nell’obiettivo, poi quando finalmente riaffiora e, nel mostrarsi, ti sussurra qualcosa che non riuscivi a vedere. taken in Alzaia192 by @elenacucci

We had spent 50 plus days on the beautiful island of Ischia. This was us moving to the mainland and filming in a Naples harbor. Wanted to light it in a way that felt spontaneous, to fit the emotion. Work lights, metal halide harbor lights was my inspiration, to feel like they just stumbled onto this. The mood in the interior was all about darkness and intimacy. Only lit by an iPhone flashlight sometimes.

Loved the tones of these scenes. Not making it beautiful and curated but more of a raw beauty feel to it.

Thanks to my incredible Italian crew that delivered their very best every single day. It feels like yesterday. Miss them all.

“Il sole e le stelle”, 2026

Con “Intercapedini”, Elena Cucci assume l’immagine fotografica come superficie di slittamento più che come dispositivo memoriale. Le opere derivano da fotografie vernacolari e frammenti del quotidiano — interni domestici, spazi di transito, luoghi temporanei — che vengono ricondotti a una dimensione sospesa attraverso il linguaggio pittorico. Nel passaggio dalla fotografia alla pittura, l’immagine perde progressivamente la propria funzione testimoniale. La sottrazione della figura umana interrompe ogni possibilità narrativa e sposta l’attenzione sulla presenza silenziosa dello spazio. Un ristorante vuoto, delle giostre immobili, le scalette di un aereo: elementi ordinari che, isolati dal flusso dell’esperienza, assumono una qualità ambigua, quasi mentale. La scelta di mantenere i formati originari delle fotografie rafforza la relazione con un immaginario intimo e analogico, ma allo stesso tempo introduce una distanza. La pittura rallenta l’immagine, ne altera la leggibilità immediata e apre una frattura tra riconoscimento e proiezione. In questo scarto, “Intercapedini” costruisce luoghi che non appartengono più al ricordo individuale, ma a una possibilità collettiva dell’abitare: spazi fragili, attraversabili, disponibili a nuove forme di presenza.

Continuing to highlight some of my favorite work and collaborations, here’s another feature with @gmuccino, a director who’s given me the space to create some of my best work.

A Casa Tutti Bene was a once in a lifetime experience as a cinematographer. The light, the culture, the talent of the actors and technicians in Italy was fantastic. But none of it works without a great script and a director who pushes you. Gabriele’s vision kept challenging me as an artist, the same way it did on Fathers and Daughters.

Hats off to my brother from another mother, and to the entire crew who helped bring this story to life. It’s since been turned into a TV series. Kudos to all.
