Point to the face that shows how much it hurts. Choose a number between one and ten. We have been asked to do this our whole lives and it has never once been enough.

@flare.endo is so proud to introduce @elendefinn, a Brooklyn-based printmaker and multidisciplinary artist currently completing her MFA at Pratt Institute whose work takes one of the most inadequate tools in chronic illness medicine and turns it into something that finally tells the truth.

Elendë has lived with chronic illness since childhood. Vision loss, chronic pain, inflammation, and the particular exhaustion of trying to explain to doctors what your body is doing when the language available to you is a row of cartoon faces and a scale of one to ten. Her piece "Pain Chart" begins there, with that impossible ask, and refuses to simplify it the way the medical system always has.

Because the reality is that chronically ill people become experts at performing fine. At smiling through it. At showing up to appointments and being told their numbers do not match their symptoms. "Pain Chart" does not resolve that contradiction. It holds it, prints it, makes it permanent and visible and impossible to dismiss.

Elendë makes work that speaks from her own experience and opens wide enough that anyone who has ever been failed by a pain scale can walk inside it.

ELENDË CONNOR
Pain Education
Paper, colored pencil, pushpins
8.5 x 11 inches

Elendë Connor is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA in printmaking from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and she is currently pursuing her MFA with a focus in printmaking from Pratt Institute. Elendë grew up in Western Massachusetts and returned there after getting her BFA and worked as an early childhood educator. At this time she also worked as a curator and events coordinator at Waterway Arts in Turners Falls, MA. Elendë is chronically ill & she creates art in response to her own complex reality as someone who faces chronic pain, vision loss, & inflammation. My art synthesizes experiences, memories, and feelings in order to translate reality into something tangible. I pull content from my existence in order to express the physical and emotional complexities of inhabiting my body. I have been chronically ill my entire life, dealing with vision loss, chronic pain, cognitive issues, loss of mobility, and medical trauma. My prints, drawings, collages, and fiber work all grapple with coping, processing, mourning, celebrating, and understanding my own identity as a chronically ill person.

Artist Statement:

When creating my work, I depict eye anatomy, medical ephemera, vision, and recollections from my childhood. Within different parts of my imagery there is loose, almost threadlike linework that is drawn or printed onto paper while only seeing through my left eye, which has very low vision. My unique way of seeing is a tool I utilize often in my work. In the past my body has felt like an obstacle within my art practice, but I find that my art truly benefits when I can react to what's going on within my body through the art that I make. My art examines my existence and aims to speak to a universal one. by @elendefinn

Very excited to be part of the fifth annual School of Art student exhibition ‘Ability Imagery: Against the Productive Self’ CURRENTLY ON VIEW at Steuben Gallery @prattexhibits
@prattpals
@prattfineart
Pratt’s School of Art Dean, Jorge Oliver, invites you to Ability Imaginary: Against the Productive
Subject, an exhibition of the work of School of Art and School of Architecture students and
recent alumni that engages with the many forms of disability and presents expansive
approaches to the meaning of access. This is the fifth collective School of Art exhibition to
showcase the work of students and alumni exploring identity in their work and is co-curated by
Pratt alum, Rachel Vera Steinberg (BFA Fine Arts, Drawing ‘08) and artist and writer Avram
Finkelstein.

This exhibition takes as its starting point the idea of an ability imaginary, which at its core is
freighted with numerous political mythologies. If framed within late-stage capitalism, ability can
be seen as code for productivity, or the potential to fulfill useful tasks. If disability is its converse,
the legibility of disability is subjected to inverted systems of valuation, by way of productivity’s
negation. Or it can be considered to be revolutionary, which is how many artists with disabilities
see it. To that end, this exhibition invokes the experience and realities of various disabilities,
forging channels of understanding outside of the realm of the visible. Through the work of
eleven artists and designers from Pratt’s School of Art and School of Architecture, Ability
Imaginary: Against the Productive Subject troubles assumptions about disability’s representation
by examining that which goes under-discussed in what defines one who is able. taken in Pratt Institute by @elendefinn
