Welcome to El Espacio 23, Gonzalo Guzmán! @gzl.gzm

Gonzalo Guzmán (Madrid, 1991) is a sculptor whose work begins with images that emerge in dreams: reduced, enigmatic presences that seem to exist prior to language, often evoking archetypal structures such as menhirs or dolmens. Rather than reproducing these images, his practice explores the possibility of bringing them into the physical world without fully translating or fixing their meaning.

Central to his work is hydroforming, an industrial process in which water pressure expands welded sheets of stainless steel from within. Removed from its conventional function of precision and repetition, the technique becomes a process of indeterminacy in which form emerges through the interaction of pressure, resistance, and material limits. Water acts simultaneously as a shaping force and an uncontrollable element, leaving behind the trace of a transient event. Guzmán’s broader research focuses on ideas of co-authorship and collaboration with nature, developing processes in which natural forces are not simply tools for making, but active participants in determining the final form.

We’re excited to welcome Gonzalo to our Artist Residency Program. Stay tuned for details about his upcoming Open Studio at El Espacio 23. taken in El Espacio 23 by @elespacio23

What does giving look like when it’s rooted in curiosity, connection, and a belief in what’s possible?

For the Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation, it’s about more than writing a check. It’s about investing in people, ideas, and organizations that help communities thrive.

After 11 years and more than $350 million in family giving, this impact report reflects on the artists, scholars, institutions, and community leaders who have helped shape that journey and the possibilities that emerge when resources and vision come together.

SUMMER WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHT

Artist @fernandafroes led Mangrove Paint: Color and Place, in collaboration with @debora.rosental and @aida.tejada , introducing students to the relationship between color, place, and South Florida’s natural environment.

Students worked with pigments derived from mangrove leaves and bark, creating compositions on cotton while learning how plants and other natural materials can be used to produce and transform color. The workshop connected artistic experimentation with the mangrove ecosystem and invited students to consider their local environment as a source of material and knowledge. 🌿

How can images challenge the ways Black women have been represented and remembered throughout history?

That is the question Val Souza (@performervalsouza) explores through her research-based artistic practice, using photography, images, and performance to investigate the historical representation of Black women and create new possibilities for seeing and imagining their lives.

Grounded in iconographic research, Val’s work brings self-portraiture into dialogue with Brazilian social imagery, contrasting historical representations with ideas of abundance, joy, and presence. During her residency at Bakehouse Art Complex (@bakehouseartcomplex), she is continuing this research through Venus, a project that challenges and reexamines historical archives and representations of Black women.

This Friday, hear directly from Val about her ongoing research during WOPHA’s Open Studio & Artists’ Conversation at El Espacio 23 (@elespacio23), alongside 2026 CCI + WOPHA Fellow Noa Batlle (@noabatllem) and 2026 WOPHA Artist-in-Residence Kay Zevallos Villegas (@kay_zevallos_villegas). The conversation will be moderated by Charo Oquet (@charooquet), artist and founder of Edge Zones Art Center (@edgezones) and the Miami Performance International Festival.

Val Souza was selected through a special partnership with Instituto Moreira Salles (@imoreirasalles), with support from The55Project Art Foundation (@the55project). The WOPHA Artists-in-Residence program is supported by the Pérez CreARTE grant program of The Jorge M. Pérez Family Foundation (@perezfamilyfoundation) at The Miami Foundation (@miamifoundation).

How do memory, territory, and ritual shape the ways we understand our bodies and the places we call home?

That is the question Kay Zevallos Villegas (@kay_zevallos_villegas) explores through her transdisciplinary practice, drawing on oral memories, popular beliefs, legends, and rituals from the Peruvian Amazon to examine the relationships between matter, memory, territory, and violence.

Growing up in Iquitos and of Quechua heritage, Kay works across performance, sculpture, and other visual languages, incorporating materials connected to the Amazon and other tropical regions. Her practice traces the histories of materials as they move through processes of extraction, circulation, exchange, and stigmatization, while reflecting on the bodies, landscapes, and communities shaped by these histories.

This Friday, get a closer look at Kay’s ongoing work during WOPHA’s Open Studio & Artists’ Conversation at El Espacio 23 (@elespacio23), alongside 2026 CCI + WOPHA Fellow Noa Batlle (@noabatllem) and 2026 WOPHA Artist-in-Residence Val Souza (@performervalsouza). How do social and spatial conditions determine who can move freely through public space?

That is the question Noa Batlle (@noabatllem) explores through “Pendientes,” a multidisciplinary project developed as part of their 2026 CCI + WOPHA Fellowship, examining accessibility, mobility, and belonging between Santo Domingo and Miami.

Beginning with performance in Santo Domingo, “Pendientes” continues in Miami through photography, with Noa photographing brightly colored ramps across spaces shaped by tourism, luxury development, financial capital, and Caribbean diasporic communities.

This Friday, get a closer look at Noa’s ongoing research during WOPHA’s Open Studio & Artists’ Conversation at El Espacio 23 (@elespacio23), alongside 2026 WOPHA Artists-in-Residence Kay Zevallos Villegas (@kay_zevallos_villegas) and Val Souza (@performervalsouza). The conversation will be moderated by Charo Oquet (@charooquet), artist and founder of Edge Zones Art Center (@edgezones) and the Miami Performance International Festival.

The CCI + WOPHA Fellowship is presented by the Green Family Foundation Caribbean Cultural Institute and WOPHA, with support from El Espacio 23 (@elespacio23), the Pérez Art Museum Miami (@pamm) Caribbean Cultural Institute, Green Space Miami (@greenspacemiami), and FIU LACC (@fiulacc).

SUMMER WORKSHOP HIGHLIGHT
Artists @nataliepriede and @pilarflerda led a hands-on ceramic figure modeling workshop with students from @fiuenlace, as part of our Summer Youth Program in collaboration with @thecollective62.
Working with clay, students learned hand-building techniques including pinching, coiling, and joining. They applied these techniques to create their own figures while exploring form, structure, proportion, and texture.

Throughout the workshop, students experimented freely with the material and the possibilities of working in three dimensions. 🏺
