A week ago today, Ché and I were at the airport awaiting our mums arrival for a two week visit. Instead, we received the shock of our lives. An ambulant picked up her phone and informed us that she had passed away in the night.

Peacefully, painlessly, full of love and excitement for the day that never came.

I don’t believe I had felt the truth of sadness or grief before this week, not even the surface.

There are no real silver linings to a loss like this, only an iron weighted grief that wakes me each morning. At daybreak, I thank it for letting me escape into a slumber devoid of dreams.

That being said, there has been a divine outpouring of love and support, reconnections, stories, and an abundance of heartfelt tears shed inside the celebration of such a formidable woman’s life.

I coined the phrase ‘magic sauce’ a year or two ago and would use it to explain that special thing she has that must be in her DNA because Ché and I share it too. We’ve always known we are an extension of her spirit, her free, wild, and whip-smart nature. But now this knowledge is held like a torch, a guide, a continuation of life inside us, side by side.

Many more words and photos will be shared, I just needed to start somewhere.

On my 28th birthday, I started giving myself a word of the year. I cannot tell you why or what inspired the theming, but I can say it has turned out to be one of the most important rituals I have chosen.

As my 30th year comes to a close and my third theme edges toward its resolution, I’ve been reflecting on what has formed at the intersection of it all. Here’s some words about words, stuck between this seasons images.

On Sunday the 21st,
this little bean celebrated her 21st.

She decided that on the day, she wanted us to go to an AFL game as our mums favourite team was playing. We giggled in the rain and cheered for whoever was winning and we were sad for whoever was losing. We ate hot dogs, drank one can of hard lemonade, and left early to get ready for dinner. The dress code? ‘Over the Top for a Pizza Shop’. She asked that my hair be as big and curly and fabulous as I could muster, that I wear red lipstick, and that I was dressed to the nines. We put ourselves together separately but both ended up looking like gothic swampy witches, which was perfect, because we are.

I adore this bébé, who long ago outgrew the seat of my hip and the length of my legs. We’ve got far more in common these days, like our love of pigeons and tracking time in old photobooths. Pictured here is the first we took and the most recent, with some parts of the birthday letter I wrote her scattered between the two.
