So you have heard of matcha…but have you heard of sencha or senchadō? There’s a whole other world of tea ceremony outside of matcha.

Senchadō, put (too) simply is the Japanese art of preparing and serving high quality loose leaf tea to guests in a mindful, elegant manner - similar in spirit to the matcha-based chanoyu (tea ceremony) but with many and important differences.

You can experience a whole world of senchadō explained and guided in a private session by the heir to the current grandmaster of a Senchadō lineage.

Tea ceremony truly goes beyond simply experiencing Japanese culture. It invites us to take a step back, move with intention and savor the now.

Dm or email us to book a private session curated just for you.

In Japan, food is never just sustenance—it is an expression of culture. Every ingredient reflects the season, respect for nature, and centuries of tradition.

Through cuisine, you don’t simply taste; you engage with the rhythm and philosophy of Japanese life.

Japanese gardens are designed to look natural and effortless, but every stone, tree, and path is carefully placed with intention. The art lies in creating harmony, balance, and a sense of timeless beauty—so even though they appear untouched, they’re meticulously curated to evoke nature in its most ideal form.

Walking in these gardens transports you to a world where time seems to flow slower or not exist the way we are used to.

Come immerse yourself in hidden green oases in the city.

Let us create a one of a kind Tokyo experience for you. Inquire through our website or DM us to start your Tokyo experience.

Shopping in Tokyo is as much about philosophy as it is about fashion. Japanese brands reflect values of craftsmanship, precision, and simplicity, while the city’s vintage shops reveal a culture that honors longevity and character.

If you’d love to explore this side of Tokyo, we tailor our tours to those interests too.

Explore lesser known gems in Japan. Inquire for more.

The beauty of “ma” (間) — a concept in Japanese culture that emphasizes the value of empty space and pauses. Rather than being seen as a void, “ma” is what gives form and meaning to everything around it. It can be felt in architecture, gardens, music, and even in the rhythm of conversation.

By allowing space for reflection and appreciation, “ma” cultivates a sense of balance and serenity, highlighting intention and inviting a deeper awareness of the present moment.

What began in the Heian period as yukatabira—simple robes worn by the nobility during or after bathing—gradually evolved over centuries. By the Edo period, as public bathhouses became popular, yukata shifted from an aristocratic bathing garment to everyday summer wear for common people, valued for their light cotton and simple indigo patterns.

With the arrival of Western clothing in the Meiji era, yukata were no longer part of daily life, but they found a new role—cherished for festivals, fireworks, and relaxing moments at ryokan and onsen. Today, they are often worn on special occasions, carrying both elegance and nostalgia.

This particular yukata is Arimatsu Shibori, a 400-year-old, intricate tie-dyeing technique. I wore it in Italy, and it felt like carrying a piece of Japanese tradition into a new setting—timeless and elegant.

In Japan, every season is celebrated — not just noticed.

From cherry blossoms in spring to the lotus in summer, the rhythms of nature are woven into daily life, traditions, and even cuisine.

Seasonal beauty reminds us to pause, be present, and appreciate the fleeting moments. This deep connection to nature is one of the things I love most about Japanese culture — and it’s something I hope to share with you through my tours.

Hi everyone! My name is Erika and I'm the founder of Elevate Tokyo. At Elevate, we offer fully bespoke private tours and premium curated experiences.

I started Elevate for a few reasons…

Even as a local Japanese who has lived here their whole life, there are endless options which can feel overwhelming. Time is limited and with all the beauty that Japan has to offer, I want people to experience the best of the best, tailored to their preferences.

I love to travel - and understand how special it is to deeply connect with a place, its culture and its people having had friends curate one of a kind experiences for me when traveling.

I love learning about Japan, the culture, all that it has to offer - the tradition and the new. I hope to shed light on the beautiful traditions and crafts that are lesser known in hopes to give back to the community and to preserve the culture.

Learning about tradition has also made me realise that so much of Japanese culture is about valuing presence, mindfulness, impermanence - so many values that we all can benefit from deeply connecting with. It enriches our lives, especially in such a digital age.

I hope to not only elevate your Japan experience but aid in you reconnecting with yourself and pause to reflect on life and all the beauty that surrounds you.
