Every emerging industry has the year where the headlines read like a funeral.

Cannabis is having its year, and it's loud.

Most people are watching the wrong number.

The messy part was fun. Triple digit growth, no discipline required, everyone a genius. That phase always ends, and what it ends with is the tourists going home.

Growth was never the metric. Margin was.

Operators who protected profitability instead of buying share are the ones who still have a balance sheet to work with, and they're about to buy the assets of everyone who didn't.
