Studio acoustics for bass music producers

One of the cheapest and most effective upgrades you can do for your monitoring is TRASHING those flimsy aluminum stands. They are highly resonant and vibrate sympathetically with cabinet vibrations from your speaker. This colors your sound in an insidious way that isn’t very apparent until it’s gone. They also wobble which introduces its own problems. A tweeter is a highly precise device that may only be moving .01mm to produce high frequencies and any additional movement of the system via the stand is causing large amounts of distortion to those frequencies. For about the same price as those guitar center stands you can build your own with 6 pieces of wood, screws, sand and few trash bags. Stupid simple but stupidly effective. The mass of two bags of play sand is enough to effectively damp the vibrations from the cabinet and massively clean up your sound. When we tested these Barefoot Footprint 01s on the metal stands I was very disappointed and was hoping we didn’t just waste $4k of the clients money. When we got them on the stands we built it was a night and day difference. The resolution of low level detail increased and the imaging tightened up immensely. The difference was objectively audible and the speakers were living up to their namesake performance. by @elevationacoustics

The build for @xeno_sound approaching its final form. Now almost fully converted from master bedroom to bass music dojo. It is awaiting the addition of more absorption and areas of scattering/diffusion.

Currently outfitted with world class monitoring from @genelec_usa , consisting of the 8361a coaxial monitors and 12” 7370a subwoofer(15” 7380a on the way). With a total system response of 15hz - 20khz +/-6db in room, calibrated through the GLM controller. This system is one of the best I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

The work in progress. Custom built tech framing, at multiple depths to maximize the balance of speaker placement, acoustic treatment and room feel.

The sidewall absorption is 9in deep offset 2in away from the hard boundary. Front wall absorption is a mixture of 9in deep and 4in behind the main speakers. The cloud absorber is 12in deep.

@xeno_sound assuming the captains at his synth spaceship. It is a pleasure to work with clients who are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve sonic excellence.

Our human ear-brain can compensate for differences in frequency response but it cannot compensate for an imbalanced TIME response. A room with a response that is too reverberant for its size, or imbalanced across frequencies will cloud your ability to make truly detailed spacial decisions in your mixes. When we treat a room we are attacking the reverb time and it just so happens the a smoother frequency usually follows along.

When we started this build the room was not symmetrical. To fix this we constructed a wall plug, filled the cavity with insulation and covered it 3/4in birch plywood. We choose birch plywood to try and match the stiffness of the opposing outside wall.

Filtered frequency response of the Genelec 7370a subwoofer, corner placed.

Proper speaker placement is 80% of the battle. All of the acoustic treatment was designed around the most optimal speaker placement against the hard boundaries of the room. by @elevationacoustics
