They Had Names | Episode 6: Adam Abdullah Yahya (آدم عبد الله يحيى) Most people in El Fasher knew him as Adam Al-Sheen (آدم الشين). Adam was a Sudanese singer, musician, and actor whose work celebrated Darfur’s traditional music, culture, and heritage. His nickname began with a joke between two friends who were both named Adam. When his friend was called Al-Sheen, meaning “the ugly one,” Adam jokingly offered to take the nickname himself. And it stayed with him throughout his musical career. Those who knew him remembered his humor, his kindness, and his dedication to helping younger musicians discover their traditional music. Adam was also a husband and father. During the war, he volunteered with charitable initiatives supporting displaced families in El Fasher. In January 2025, Adam was killed when artillery shelling attributed to the Rapid Support Forces struck the home where he and his family had taken refuge in the Abu Jarboon neighborhood. His music, his laughter, and the memories he created with those around him deserve to be remembered. May Allah have mercy on Adam and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. They Had Names | Episode 5: Mohamed Mukhtar Ismail Hamid (محمد مختار إسماعيل حامد) He was only 14 years old. Affectionately known as Hamed (حامد), Mohamed was one of the youngest volunteers with the El Fasher and Camps Emergency Room. His father, Mukhtar Ismail Hamid, led the emergency response room, and Mohamed was already following in his footsteps. In the final days of his life, Mohamed helped distribute food baskets, prepare meals for families fleeing Zamzam displacement camp, and promote handwashing alongside his friend Ramzi. On April 21, 2025, Mohamed was injured by shrapnel during artillery shelling attributed to the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher. He died the following morning, April 22. His friend Ramzi was also reported killed. Mohamed was a child who spent his final days helping families survive a war. He deserved the chance to grow up, continue his education, and experience everything life had ahead of him. May Allah have mercy on Mohamed and Ramzi and grant them Jannatul Firdaus. They Had Names | Episode 4: Siham Hassan Hasaballah (سهام حسن حسب الله) Siham was a former Sudanese parliamentarian, humanitarian volunteer, and advocate for the people of Darfur. In 2016, she was recognized as the youngest member of Sudan’s parliament, where she challenged government officials over violence against civilians and advocated for vulnerable communities. Years later, during the siege of El Fasher, she continued that work on the ground, helping provide food to displaced families, widows, and orphans through community kitchens. Just two days before her death, she was still distributing food at Saudi Hospital. On October 26, 2025, Siham was killed during the RSF takeover of El Fasher. Her husband survived but was forced to flee without being able to bury her. Siham spent years speaking up for the people of Darfur, and until her final days, she continued serving them. Through They Had Names, I hope to preserve the stories of those whose lives were taken, honoring not only how they died, but who they were and how they lived. If you knew Siham personally and have memories, photographs, or stories you would like to share, please reach out privately. With your permission, I would love to continue documenting her life. They Had Names | Episode 3: Al-Nour Suleiman Al-Nour (النور سليمان النور) Al-Nour was 38 years old. A journalist, radio presenter, and editor who dedicated his career to informing the people of North Darfur. His colleagues remembered him as someone who believed journalism was more than a profession. It was a responsibility to tell the truth and document the experiences of his community. On October 3, 2025, a Rapid Support Forces drone strike hit his home in El Fasher. Al-Nour died from his injuries the following day. His friends and family were unable to safely gather for a proper funeral because of the continuing bombardment. Al-Nour spent his career helping others tell their stories. Today, we remember his. They Had Names | Episode 2: Dr. Adam Ibrahim Ismail (الدكتور آدم إبراهيم إسماعيل) For more than 700 days, Dr. Adam reportedly served in the emergency department of Saudi Hospital in El Fasher, treating the sick and wounded under incredibly dangerous conditions. Beyond his work as a physician, he helped journalists document what was happening inside the besieged city, ensuring that the suffering of his community did not go unheard. On October 27, 2025, Dr. Adam was reportedly killed by the Rapid Support Forces after being detained while attempting to flee El Fasher. His life was dedicated to caring for others, and he deserves to be remembered for far more than the circumstances of his death. Through They Had Names, I hope to preserve the stories of those whose lives were taken in El Fasher and honor who they were beyond the headlines. If you knew Dr. Adam personally and have memories, photographs, or stories you would like to share, please reach out privately. With your permission, I would love to continue documenting his life.
