Villeneuve sur Yonne, France 2025

France is my artistic home; for forty years I have been travelling throughout this country, right to its furthest corners. Bordeaux was my mother’s home; I spent my childhood in these pine forests between Cap Ferret and Lacanau. Now it is ablaze there, and my heart is bleeding. We must adapt to these new climatic conditions. We must implement fire prevention measures and hold people accountable. France is too beautiful to watch it burn to the ground.

Montsoreau, France 2026

It’s always wonderful to return to places where so many memories are concentrated. Montsoreau and the Loire are just such a place: the Loire, which has always been unnavigable, flows quietly and leisurely through its ever-changing bed; the silence and the open sky hint at the sea, which is still 300 km away. Anyone visiting the area shouldn’t miss Fontevraud, where the wonderful exhibition ‘Chambre Noir, toile blanche’, exploring painting in photography, is currently on show.

These photographs were not taken a hundred years ago — yet they seem to belong to another time. Elger Esser’s images are marked by a quiet melancholy, hovering somewhere between memory and the present. Taken with a large-format camera and refined in the darkroom with subtle sepia tones, they evoke the faded beauty of historical postcards.

For his views of Étretat, Esser drew inspiration from literature, historical imagery, and the long artistic tradition of depicting the Normandy coast. Yet his photographs do not seek to recreate the past. Rather, they are quiet acts of remembrance — a homage to a landscape that has captivated artists for generations.

The absence of people, the softness of focus, and the diffused light lend the scenes a timeless atmosphere. They invite us to reflect on the fragility of nature, the passage of time, and the enduring power of a place such as Étretat.

Für diese Einzelausstellung von ELGER ESSER wurden vierzehn repräsentative Meereslandschaften zusammengestellt, die die unverwechselbare Schönheit und die faszinierende Intensität seiner malerischen Fotografien widerspiegeln.
Groß- und kleinformatige Bilder (museale Diasec Arbeiten und miniaturhafte Fotografien auf versilberter Kupferplatten) laden zum kontemplativen Innehalten ein, fernab von den lauten, hektischen Zwängen des Alltags.
