This Wednesday, join Liz Johnson Artur (@lizjohnsonartur) for an evening of film, music and conversation exploring UK sound system culture and the role of photography and film in documenting it.

The programme centres on Pass the Mic, a film tracing the evolution of early grime and the formative sites that shaped the genre across London – from Deja Vu FM to Rhythm Division. Following the screening, the event will continue in the Upper Bar with a live performance by Elheist (@elheist), responding to Johnson Artur’s work.

On Thursday 28 May, join us for an evening of film, photography and music to celebrate Liz Johnson Artur’s new video work ‘Lord of the Mics’, documenting the evolution of early grime.

Through a collage of photographs and video footage taken by @lizjohnsonartur in the early 2000s, ‘Lord of the Mics’ immortalises the key sites of grime across London from Deja Vu FM to Rhythm Division. The film — edited by @tabathabv — moves gradually from the intimate, DIY spaces of pirate radio stations onto the dance floors of Hackney and Leyton.

Thursday 28 May, 19:30-21:00
53 Brixton Station Road, London SW9 8PB
