Filipino fusion cafe serving sandwiches, drinks and sweets

This new cafe specialises in bringing Filipino flavours to breakfast and lunch. The brother and sister duo has operated a Filipino catering business before opening in a former butcher's shop.

We tried a variety of their dishes - all reinventing Filipino flavours into Western style brunch faves. I had the chance for an impromptu interview with Ronny to learn more about their concept.

We tried:
- Ube latte - one of the richest tasting ones I tried, so lovely. Served with a ube ball (it will stain your teeth!)
- Dulce du leche latte - has such a strong dulce du leche (caramelish) taste, perfect for sweet lovers. I believe there's no coffee in this one
- Fried Chicken Brioche - this was absolutely loaded. The chicken was succulent and had a balanced savoury flavour. Love the soft bun and generous egg for a solid brekky roll.
-Lunch bowl with pork - unfortunately didn't catch the name. There was a mix of chutney, pickles and roasted calamansi which were a refreshing contrast to the richness of the pork
- Beef Brisket Toastie - very succulent and tender meat with a distinct Filo flavour. Good ratio of cheese, meat to bread
- dulce du leche french toast - I LOVED the dulce du leche topping it came with (was like a dense, more intense flavoured flan)
- biscoff cookie is also a solid option for a smaller sweet treat

Trying the new family-run filo cafe in Coburg 📍 Eli Cafe @eli_cafe73

Woweee! Run by siblings, Jenny and Ron (former sous chef at Rockpool 😮). Some standouts were our favourite toasties (Beef Brisket + Asado), ube latte ⭐️ and 100% the Pork and Prawn Coconut curry dish

They run a catering business called Kusinero and they also sell that curry there !! 🤤 @kusineroscateringcompany

Would try the Longanisa Pandesal next!

Eli Café in Coburg is bringing a little taste of the Philippines to Melbourne and I’m here for it ✨

It’s only a matter of time before this gem isn’t so hidden anymore with their uniquely delicious menu and warm service that’s full of heart ❤️

The menu is best described as Filipino fusion. You’ll find creative twists on traditional Filo dishes you won’t find elsewhere in Melbourne 🇵🇭

The Beef Brisket toastie was in a league of it’s own. It’s cheesy, saucy, a little bit messy, and according to my friend, the “best toastie I’ve ever had” 🔥  Literally licking the plate clean may not be all that socially acceptable, but it is the ultimate compliment to the chef 👏

Just another moment to appreciate the toastie in all its glory. They also do a cheesy mushroom toastie with mushroom XO sauce for vegetarians (vegan on request) 🍄‍🟫

It wouldn’t be a Filipino café without ube and it’s on the menu in abundance here. I’m a massive ube fan so this was good news for me. You’ll find it in both the drinks and the sweets at Eli Café and they make their own halaya so infuse into all their ube treats 💜

The ube latte comes in both an iced and hot version. The hot version also comes with a mini sweet treat 🤤

Lecheflan is the other very famous sweet in the Philippines and here you can get it on the sweet toast, a generous slice of fried brioche that also comes with hazelnut feulletine, lime zest, and a toasted vanilla ice cream. There’s also a delightful dulce de leche iced drink that also has lecheflan inside 🍮

The team also make some unique open style sandwiches on homemade flatbreads. We tried the short rib stacked with caramelised onion, house pickles, provolone cheese, and crispy chilli oil. The meat was so tender it literally slid right off the bone and melted in the mouth 🍖

The ube layer cake is coming to the menu soon and it was an absolute delight. It’s layer of a super light, moist, almost sponge-like ube cake with a lovely cream filling. It’s the perfect sweet slice to finish your meal 🍰

Behind every great café is a story, and this one is extra special. 🤍

Eli Café is a family-owned Filipino café named after the chef’s son, Eli.

Founded by the team behind Kusinero’s Catering, it’s a passion project built on family, community, and a love for sharing Filipino flavours.

The chef also brings years of experience from Rockpool Bar & Grill at Crown Melbourne, and it shows in every dish.

What we tried:

We also got to try their Lumpiang Shanghai, which was one of their chef’s specials for the weekend. One thing I love about Eli Café is that they regularly offer rotating specials, so every visit can bring something new.

My standout? The Beef Pares Sandwich. Tender, rich, and packed with the comforting flavours of a classic Filipino favourite.

new brunch spot alert 👀

eli cafe started out as a catering business before opening up their own storefront in coburg, serving up filipino-inspired dishes with plenty of flavour (and a head chef who’s a former Rockpool chef 🫣).

the beef brisket toastie was probably my favourite. perfectly toasted, cheesy, packed with tender brisket and pickles that added the perfect sweet-sour crunch. honestly packs a punch of flavour with every bite 🤤

the longganisa pandesal is their filipino take on a bacon and egg roll, complete with pickled carrots for a little extra zing.

if you’re after something more filling, the crispy pork belly bowl is a must. heaps of crispy pork belly, loads of peanut sauce, and the perfect balance of crispy skin and melt-in-your-mouth fat 😮‍💨

and PLEASE get the iced ube latte. super ube-y, super delicious, and one of the best drinks we tried 💜

definitely worth adding to your brunch list.
