The second of the two animated illustrations I was asked to make for @tankhousenyc 🏖️ this one is for Secret Beach, a complex, beachy scent inspired by days spent in the sun on the Rockaway Peninsula. Pictured are several of the main notes, including amber crystals, sea-sprayed jasmine, strawberry, and cherry. All illustrated assets were created in Procreate and animated in Adobe After Effects. Thank you so much again to Gabe and Tony for their trust in executing this amazing project 🍹 taken in Rockaway Peninsula by @eliillustrates

So excited to be able to share one of the animated illustrations I was asked to do for @tankhousenyc !!! This one is for their scent Vibrant Skyline, an incense, juniper berry, and lily of the valley based scent inspired by sunsets on the Manhattan skyline 🌆 pictured in the animation is the Manhattan bridge with a backdrop of the skyline, as well as incense smoke, a lily of the valley plant, and a branch of juniper berries to represent some of the key notes in the fragrance.

The illustrated assets were made in procreate and animated in adobe after effects. Thank you so much to Gabe and Tony for this wonderful opportunity, I loved every second of making this

It’s no secret that the prospects of employment suck for all artists right now, but a factor that’s often left out of the conversation is how hard it is for anyone who isn’t a white, cis-het, able-bodied man with a financial safety net to get hired in the age of generative Al, mass layoffs, and a global shift towards right-wing authoritarianism.

I doubt this is a surprise because I’m pretty open about it, but I’m a trans man. The extensive and ongoing process of transitioning socially, medically, and legally has significantly improved my quality of life, which is to say that don’t regret it one bit.

I was under the impression that post-grad job hunting would be relatively straightforward besides the awful current job market since all of my documents match - a privilege that not all trans people have. But I was sorely mistaken.

A few weeks ago, my cis friend texted me about a packaging design job that she applied to and got an interview for, despite not having much packaging design in her illustration portfolio. I checked the job posting and realized it was a position had received an automated rejection email for a few days prior. I’m not a packaging designer by trade but I have packaging design in my portfolio, I’ve optimized my resume for ATS, keep my Linkedin and portfolio website updated, which are all things you’re told to do.

This wasn’t the first time this type of situation has occurred, but it was good evidence to suggest that my applications might be filtered out before ever being seen by a human - purely because of something out of my control. I also doubt that it’s merely a coincidence that my trans friends are the ones struggling to get hired the most post-grad, even though they’re some of the most talented and hardworking people I know.

This is the result of people posturing trans identities as something “crazy” or “abnormal” and actively contributing to the agenda to push us out of public life. We’re a legal liability because of how politicized our identities are, and many companies are not willing to take that risk when a perfectly “acceptable” cis candidate is applying for the same role.
