Hopefully this helps fight the “gymflation” we see all over social media lately

It’s easy to get scrolled into thinking fitness is an overnight transformation. We see the highlights, but we don’t always see the 500+ days of showing up after leaving the job site exhausted, still hitting the workouts, and adding weight to the bar.

Natural progress is a slow burn. You get used to the new version of yourself in the mirror, but when you finally stop to look back at the “Day 1” version, you’ll actually see how far you’ve come

I’m really proud of the work I’ve put in and the results I’ve gotten, time to switch gears and get ready for the Edmonton half marathon to really solidify those tan lines.

It’s a really ugly deadlift, but I’m unbelievably happy with this pull. 5 plates has been a goal of mine for a long time, and finally hitting it was pure euphoria.

Hopefully, my bench and squat PRs fall later this week, too. Then, it’s straight into half marathon prep.

How hard do you like to push?

This month, my progression has slowed down significantly. Working 12-hour shifts has made it a lot harder to be consistent in the gym. My focus, effort, and consistency have all started to slip.

Fatigue has been building up, and it’s showing in my workouts, but I only have one week left, so I just need to put my head down and get it done.

Wednesday has been my one rest day of the week for the last 2 months now.

With lifting 5 days a week, working a physical job, and running on Saturdays I’ve had to really focus on my recovery, learned lots but definitely still things I need to improve on. So we keep learning.

They say “The wise man learns from other peoples mistakes, the smart man learns from his own mistakes, and the dumb man refuses to learn.”

I’ve spend a lot of time being dumb but learning this lesson is creeping me into the smart territory, my hope is that you’ll watch, listen, and learn, thus being wise.

Day in the life of living out of a hotel room.

Honestly I really enjoyed the simplicity of just waking up, going to work, hitting the gym, getting food, and letting the evening pass in preparation to do it all again tomorrow.

It takes me back to nearly a decade ago when my wife and I first started dating and would go weeks without seeing each other but spent every night FaceTiming, till one of us fell asleep (I was always the one).

500 pound deadlift coming soon…

Stoked on closing out the month with a 385 stiff legged deadlift. Next week is the last month of “Kong” by Alex Bromley, really happy with the progress I’ve made so far.

Goal: Sub 1:45 half marathon and a 400lb squat

I’ve learned the hard way that you can’t do it all at once. In the past, trying to juggle a 4-day powerlifting split with a 5-day ultra plan just left me burnt out and broken.

This time, the approach is different. Phase one is prioritizing a 400lb squat, 250lb bench, and 500lb deadlift by May. Phase two shifts the focus to a sub 1:45 for the Edmonton Half Marathon in August.

To stay within striking distance of that 1:45, I’m keeping one weekly run to protect my base, alternating between distance and intensity each week. I’m finding it’s allowed me to stay athletic and get some miles in with Winnie in the YEG river valley.

Anyone else found the sweet spot between strength and cardio, or are you still redlining?

Road to 400.

Leg day #2 for the week. Today’s focus is on driving through the sticking point by adding in pin squats and quad focused hack squats.

Starting the bar from a dead stop eliminates the bounce and forces that raw power out of the hole. It’s a slow grind, but we’re staying dialed in.

Following it up with RDL’s and back extensions helps give rigidity to the back to insure it won’t turn into a “squat morning” and I can keep the load under control the whole time.

Keeping the edge in the off-season.

A few reps of scent-work during our morning walk to keep Winnie sharp. Walk away, hide a pheasant-scented ball, and let her work the wind. It’s simple, but it keeps that hunting drive dialed in until the season opens back up.

Nothing beats watching a Golden Retriever doing what they were bred for.

4500km later and I saw and experienced a lot but learned even more.

Princess auto is a weird but very useful place, Napa’s in small towns don’t always open when they’re supposed too, listen to a bunch of old folks drink and get very excited about meat raffles, if you know your truck won’t start in the morning park on a hill, how to replace a starter and it’s solenoid, I had a cinnamon bun in Nelson, there are no speed traps once you get past hope so you can drive as fast as you want, the ranger tops out at 120 on flat and 140 down a hill, cranbrook reminded me of the movie Halloween town but when the town was all grey Kimberley is an awesome little town though 20 minutes up the road, the roads in the Rockies are weirdly straight, not everyone from the Maritime’s are hard to understand, Banff is actually in Alberta like legit in Alberta, saw some elk and big horned sheep, even though mount Robson is big you still can’t see it through a blizzard, went on a self guided grizzly bear tour, my phone got pooped on by a bird, the ranger can drift, bathed in actual ice water, the Ranger doesn’t like hills, pushed the ranger hard on highway 97c (3rd gear at 4000rpm for half hour up a hill), ate three bowls of instant noodles at a gas station, did some back road fishtailing, tried to enter the ranger into a race, made a drug dealer laugh, some street performers taught me how to spin fire, met the season 7 winner of big brother Canada, met an architect gone homeless math wise who blew my mind for an hour, was told that it never hurts to ask because the worst that can happen is you get a “no” so I took that and asked an elderly lady who was walking her horse if I could ride it, got very overwhelmed in a grocery store, ran out of imaginary debates to win in my head, went retro and listened to a lot of CD’s, grew a new appreciation for being able to stream music, continually failed to find bucks and grouse, replaces an alternator, met a kind man who build the ski resort in Kimberley, kinda saw mount Currie, had a good trip.

Goals for next time: see a grizzly, moose, fight a cougar and win, ride a horse. taken in British Columbia by @elikrause4
