Obligatory Ox Bow summer photo series

I could just post 20 sunsets or 20 drawings or 20 dances or 20 other things

Had such a lovely time and learnt so much from so many lovely people, from putting on a film festival, floxbow, to DJing (badly), working in their fascinating archives and playing stump. Still coming down from the high!

More serious art of lots of the work I made to follow but for now, was a pleasure being part of the 2026 Ox bow Fellowship, what a special time and place!

Hello I graduated this last week and also did our MFA Thesis show and also have been (allegedly) on strike and also have been saying goodbye and hello to friends and had my ONE grad school cigarette. I moved to Chicago for grad school and it has been my whole life for the last two years and now I don't know what to do ! We laughed we cried and I cooked lots of beets!

Elias Mendel (@elimendel) is a London-born, Chicago-based interdisciplinary artist who creates stop-motion animations, sculptures, drawings, prints, writing and performances. He deploys this multifaceted approach to investigate the intersection between dreams, roots, and the abyss, examining legibility, language, diaspora and belonging. These concerns have emerged from his investigation into a vast family history and archive that grapples with the aftermath of fascism and the Holocaust. Mendel engages with this history through mark-making as well as working with the archival, researching, cataloguing, and writing. Alongside his artistic practice, he has a workshop teaching practice, in which he leads arts, archival, and educational workshops.

Mendel is completing his MFA at the University of Illinois Chicago, and studied history and politics at the University of Manchester. He spent a year in Berlin after receiving the Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant. The Letters to Yesterday memorial project was developed there and was exhibited as part of the Casablanca Art Biennale (2021), shortlisted for the John Ruskin Art Prize in London (2023), and exhibited during his first solo exhibition at the Johannesburg Holocaust and Genocide Centre (2022). Since then, he has exhibited in New York, Chicago, Johannesburg, Casablanca, Berlin and London. taken in Gallery 400 by @elimendel

UIC MFA 2026 candidate Elias Mendel will be presenting a performance piece 'Dear Beetroot' on the opening night of the thesis show, April 7th.

This piece concerns his dialogue with beetroot, a found letter and a dancer from his family's archive, Martha.

Mendel will draw, translate, dance and cook beets. by @elimendel

Lovely to take part of @truefalsefilmfest for the premiere of @landscapesofmemoryfilm

So amazing to be part of such an important film challenging and questioning how we memorialise personally and collectively the Holocaust. This memory should not be used to justify horrors wrought by nations and states.

Important for us all to laugh together and cry together in the many other beautiful films.

Thanks to the wonderful @leah___gal for making it happen. So glad I met you in a concentration camp!
