Practising my seminar talk to the only audience available: a lot of plants and one radiator.
Current time: 14 minutes. Allowed time: 12. Something has to go, and it won’t be the moss slide.

All Saints’ weekend in Sweden means candles. Thousands of them, between the pines, dark at four in the afternoon.
I don’t have anyone buried here. I just go every year, because it’s the quietest, kindest thing this city does.

Halloween costume: field ecologist.
Effort level: I wore my work clothes and added a leaf.
Three people asked what I was supposed to be. Fair.

Teaching 14 undergrads today. I learned half of these mosses' names this week 🌿
Turns out you mostly need a hand lens, a thermos and the confidence to say "good question".
One of them knew a liverwort I didn't. Respect.

Yes, in Sweden a PhD is an actual job. Contract, salary, vacation days, the whole thing.
The catch: four years of being paid to understand moss slightly better.

Would you do a PhD if it was a paid job?

Clocks went back this weekend. It's 16:47 and the sun has officially clocked out.
So this is the season of lamps, tea and pretending I'm fine with it.

How do you survive the dark months?

Took the ferry out to the archipelago before the winter timetable kicks in.
It was 6 degrees, the wind had opinions, and it was still the best decision of the week.

Anyone else squeezing in one last ferry trip?

Presented a paper at journal club today. Six people, one projector, zero disasters.
Someone asked a question I actually knew the answer to. I’m framing that moment.

Day off. Promised myself I wouldn’t look at a single lichen.
I lasted about eleven minutes. In my defence, they were very good lichens.

What’s the thing you can never fully switch off from?

‘One more turn’ is a scientifically meaningless unit of time. I now have data to prove it (swipe for the timestamps).
In my defence, it was raining and the data and I were on a break.

Which game does this to you?

The supervisor meeting went fine. I left with more questions than I brought, which I’m told is the point.
The train home was the first quiet ten minutes all day.

Last week: mud. This week: the same mud, but in labelled paper bags 🌿
Sorting fieldwork samples is slow, quiet and weirdly satisfying. Sample 37 came with a very confused spider (slide 3).

47 down. Please don’t ask how many to go.
