Found more photos I took of my mom while going through some old boxes. This time, they’re from when I had just started taking pictures with my father’s Canon camera and his black-and-white film. I was 16. She was 36. by @elinorcarucci

As I go through my archive, preparing for this retrospective, I'm rediscovering photographs I'd overlooked from MOTHER, a body of work documenting Eden Emmanuelle's first decade. by @elinorcarucci

Why can’t you be nicer to your brother? 2012

This image is one of the photographs that concluded Mother, the body of work I published in 2013. Going through my archives these days, as I prepare for a major retrospective, I came across the other images from this shoot.

Having twins, I was constantly mediating between them. Sometimes I would be angry with one of them, only to realize later that I had misunderstood what had happened, and then feel guilty. There was the inevitable tension, jealousy, closeness, and competition between two children growing up side by side, and the particular intensity of being a twin.

Looking at these photographs now, I see Emmanuelle’s pain and frustration, but also something larger: the pain of being a child, of feeling misunderstood, and of not yet having the words or perspective to explain what you are feeling.

Going through my folders and the many images also reminds me why editing is such an essential part of making photographs. It is not only about the images we choose to take, but the images we choose to bring into the world. Each photograph tells a story, but when we select one, we also choose one aspect of that story to represent. by @elinorcarucci

Going through old images, I found this one: Emmanuelle, my daughter, sad at Halloween in 2010. I looked at it yesterday, not even remembering the moment, where it was taken, or why she was sad. by @elinorcarucci
