BFI Director Lab 2026. A script, a bite of rehearsal time, a multi-cam shoot.

Incredible to spend a weekend in the company of five other directors, a team of actors and a gods-honest army of mega-talented crew, speed-running a three-camera short film shoot. (That enough hyphenated words?)

As one one of the other directors said, it was part vision quest, part ultramarathon, part festival; and totally fucking magic to get to just TRY SHIT with no stakes. Pure experimentation, everything deleted at the end. Divine.

So well held by @filmhubsw, @bournemouthfilmschool and facilitator genius Em Smith. I slept for fifteen hours when I got home.

Long live play, long live shitting yourself because things are scary and new and you’ve never directed a capital-A Action Sequence for camera before.

belatedly (because it’s happening right now) delighted that my gay insect fantasia ‘tick box’ has been selected as a finalist for the script competition at @womenxfest!

I first developed the script on the @filmhubsw New Voices scheme and am thrilled to be taking it through the writer’s residency and pitch sessions this weekend. it’s been gorgeous to be in such a warm, supportive and inspiring environment for the last few days meeting so many incredible female and nonbinary filmmakers. thank you @riannepictures.

yay for bugs! yay for gay people!

Thrilled to say that Dawnbreaker has been selected for the @screenargyll Sea Change Film Festival 2026!

As a film untangling tricky legacies and obligations that women leave for each other (with a bit of gentle magical realism in there) we’re so delighted that it’ll be screening on the beautiful Isle of Tiree this September, at this festival celebrating female filmmakers and filmmakers of marginalised genders! 🌊🌅

BTS / trophy reveal for DEAD WIFE HUG (2025). Sometimes you just gotta lock in and make a micro short that makes exactly zero sense.

Shout out to @exeterphoenix for the ingredients that inspired this instant classic:
- genre: biopic
- dialogue: “I think we’ve dropped the ball there.”
- prop: playing cards
- optional plot beat: a spillage

god bless collaboration and and friendship and flocks of pigeons that immediately abandon the spot they always hang out at the second you try and get them on film 🙏🏻🐦

Bonus final slide: @picketspickets treating the completely delirious film crew to 20 minutes of cultural analysis on the Saturday night, post-wrap. by @elinorlower

DEAD WIFE HUG (2025)
