Gravel escapism in Lone Pine, California.

Taking a break from sharing Euro travels for a weekend earlier this summer riding through Lone Pine.

We rolled out early from the campsite, trying to beat the hot, piercing high-desert heat. But with more than 3,300 ft of climbing over loose, sandy gravel, and not quite enough water, this quickly became a ride I wanted to forget.

The beauty of the landscape, though, I’ll always remember.

A 15 minute walk from the center of Munich is the Isar river, where people wade and swim to cool off in the summer heat. Spending the afternoon in these clear and clean water made me fall in love with Munich.

Hike at Lake Schrecksee.

10 miles, nearly 4,000 ft of elevation, to witness a panoramic view of one of the most beautiful lakes in the Allgäu Alps. When you reach the top, you’re met with stunning turquoise water accompanied by a symphony of nonstop bells jangling around the necks cows that graise freely.

My Nikon FM jammed the night before the hike, and I am so glad I was able to fix it, because look at this shit!

DEGREE OF CERTAINTY, directed by Simon Schneider (@simonjschneider).

Following premieres at @hollyshorts and @flickers.riiff, and @asffestival on the horizon, I’m excited to finally share some of this film. The questions at the center of this story, feel especially resonant now, as I share in a heat wave in Los Angeles.

We built these images around immersing the audience in the 1980s, and specifically the look of print film. Visually we explored systems, information, power, and the patterns that connect them. I’m proud of what our team created!

Last month’s road trip around the Southwest. From Ghost Ranch where Georgia O’Keefe spent many years painting, to Sedona’s Chapel of the Holy Cross nestled into the red rocks, and finally Taos, where the Earth literally splits in two.

I’m honored that Camino will screen at the Maine Outdoor Film Festival (@maineoutdoorfilmfestival).

Growing up in Rockport, my earliest experiences of freedom, reflection, and movement happened outdoors in Maine. (Often on a bike.) Those rituals in nature are at the heart of this film.

Looking forward to bringing Camino home.

The road begins in Taos. Camino premieres this April at the inaugural @taosff.

Shot on 4-perf 35mm in the Angeles National Forest, the film follows a cyclist climbing toward something he’s trying to let go of. Not a word of dialogue. Just breath, wind, and light on the mountain.

Grateful to the team who brought it to life.

September trip to Yosemite National Park on 35mm film. One of the places that you can try to describe or photograph, but never quite summarize the experience of seeing the valley in front of you. Like many before me, I make my own attempt at photographing the natural beauty of Yosemite.

Includes Half Dome, The Royal Arches, Yosemite Valley and El Capitan, Tuolumne Meadows and Tuolumne Grove of @yosemitenps.

All images shot on beautiful #35mm #portra400 and #5222 film with a Nikon FM. Processed and scanned by @lafilmlab. Black and white 35mm photograph of Yosemite National Park, by Eliot Grigo. taken in Yosemite National Park by @eliotgrigo

CAMINO | 4-perf 250D & 50D 35mm

“Shooting on film is often regarded as a way to discipline the process and focus only on what’s important. Here, with a bicycle climbing in the Angeles National Forest—being diligent in our storytelling was essential. 35mm offered welcomed limitations that provoked creativity—like figuring out how to photograph a professional cyclist with an ARRI 435 climbing a mountain. And more importantly, how to stay connected to our character’s emotional experience on the bike.

Using a 35mm body alongside the bike’s movement—meant Steadicam—meant an E-Trike—that became challenging part. Other projects you might mount a small camera to the frame to immerse, but on this we needed to think of different ways. Sometimes, the simplest approach like having the character mimic motion while we remained on sticks below—created the highest emotional impact. Film promotes that kind of creative problem-solving.

The latitude and organic tonal response of film was breathtaking in the mountains. The latitude of 250D is incredibly impressive, allowing us to point into the sun while still holding detail in shaded foregrounds.” - @eliotgrigo

After wrapping a rigorous and deeply formative two years at @americanfilminstitute, I took some drives and camping trips up the coast.

The panoramic scope and dramatic topography of this State feels like a return to innocence—the scale, the silence, the light. Peaks near 10,000 feet, trees older than memory, and the kind of stillness that re-centers everything. I highly recommend crying to the view at Big Sur—absolutely revitalizing (Slide 1).

All images shot on beautiful #35mm #portra400 film with a Nikon FM.
