Metamorphosen des Materials bieten auch die beiden Objekte von Elisa Manig. Was sich da von den Lichtschienen abseilt, transformiert deren Formensprache und verabschiedet sich von deren Funktion: Wir haben keine Designvarianten für Leuchten vor uns, sondern technoide Apparaturen, die sich in rätselhafter Bruchstückhaftigkeit in den Raum vorantasten. Manigs Objekte erscheinen so präzise wie uneindeutig, und ihre Verspannung zwischen Decke und Boden lässt sich imaginär in abgründige Regionen fortsetzen. Denn an diesen Lianen aus Stahl und PVC, so scheint es, sprießt Unbehagliches: Ihre »Blütenkelche« zeigen Anklänge an Fußfesseln oder Halseisen. Der Titel der beiden Arbeiten verstärkt die Suggestion einer schmerzhaften Intensität: Pluggers, so heißen auch zahnmedizinische Instrumente, die für Wurzelkanalbehandlungen verwendet werden.

Two chain-like strands, composed of bent steel elements, hang parallel from the ceiling. Each individual element recalls the form of technical brackets or cable clips, while at the same time evoking handcuffs or shackles. Through their serial linkage, a rhythmic system
emerges that calls to mind tank tracks, industrial gearing, or a mechanical spine. At floor level, the strands meet a mound-like accumulation of gravel and rubble. The chain as a symbol of linear mechanics — of progress, motion, and enforcement-encounters a chaotic material field. The chain becomes an image of a sequence of events, of being overwhelmed by news, crises, and conflicts. The repetition of elements, the monotonous link-by-link formation, evokes the impression of an unstoppable mechanism—a time that accelerates, condenses, and grows heavier. The gravel mound stands for the unplannable, the overlooked, that accumulates until it itself becomes an obstacle. The penetration of the gravel mound becomes an image of transition or disruption. It’s a slow, heavy sinking—a state between movement and stasis, between being
stuck and moving on. Within this field of tension, the resistance of the material encounters the
question of how one might remain in motion despite the weight of the load.

plugger(s) are bodies in space that appear to be connected,
but do not transmit anything—hybrids of
surveillance technologies, lighting systems, and
abstract satellite bodies. They appear to be
relic from a technologized world – a
fragmentary system of pipes, sheet metal,
connectors, and bright green cables that
appears both precise and enigmatic. It could be an
antenna, a power line, a sensor – or
simply a „defense system“ against the unknown.

What appears to be a communication system
also seems to be a defensive architecture—this
ambiguity lies at the heart of the work: it shows how
systems of protection can become structures of isolation.
The work speaks of the longing for
connection in a world of permanent networking, in which
every signal also means control.
