Beekeeping in the Endtimes - Impulse talk, film screening & discussion

How do we cohabit in troubled planetary ecologies? How to do environmental anthropology in troubled ecologies and global struggles for democracy? And how can ethnographic film serve as one possible device for a public and engaged environmental anthropology?

We tackle these questions in the impulse talk “Ethnographic film as a format for Public Anthropology? Thinking with Beekeeping in the End Times” together with the screening of the film “Beekeeping in the End Times” by anthropologists and filmmakers Larisa Jašarević and Azra Jašarević.

Beekeeping in the End Times is an indie documentary by Larisa Jašarević and Azra Jašarević, the co-directors, sisters, and beekeepers. It brings together ethnographic research and filmmaking to tell upbeat stories about multispecies love and human responsibility in the face of the world going to wrack and ruin.

The talk and the screening are followed by a joint discussion, sparked by comments from
the anthropologists, filmmakers, and beekeepers Greca Meloni @grecanaty (University of Vienna) and Felix Remter @felix.remter (Rachel Carson Center LMU Munich) @rachelcarsoncenter

Everybody is very welcome!

Speed bumps that reduce traffic noise; rooftop antennas that transmit 5G signals; curtains, clothing, trees and new types of pavement that block, reflect or refract radiant heat. But the connection between waves and their matters is neither simple nor stable. Waves mess with bodies, with cities, with devices — their effects are vague, difficult to put into words, and hard to trace. Between physics and politics, they do not only attend to the spectrum. They are also spectral.

A little bit of #thehague …

Found myself by chance in a city that during the last few weeks, while many parts of Europe and the Northern Hemisphere are sweltering, was around in the media as a praised recommendation for ‘coolcation’ - at least at this point - coming with long windy beaches featuring a view on offshore wind energy parks, ‘understated elegance’ and ‘diplomatic grandeur’, they say; cycling and e-mobility infrastructure …
Inspirational, altough perhaps a bit too perfect, for reading and writing on urban climate politics, while following drying rivers and burning lands and the full load of heat inequities, if at all politically tackled as a temporary wave coming every year somewhat surprising, hitting unprepared; treated are - if at all - its symptoms not its causes, and comes the end of summer and the wave flattens, symptoms and effects are pushed aside until the next surprising peak …

Someone turned 18 yesterday:)

What a beautiful ride it has been, still is, and how precious every moment is!

celebrating an 18th is also a good moment to share our top 5 bits of specific senior knowledge we have created :-)
*Disclaimer: all this knowledge is shared and discussed with our vets, but this is still not advice from a vet.*

1. Day - night - awake - asleep - all just suggestions - follow your mood it is.

2. Enough other beings are met for one livetime! Happy to reconnect with familiar ones, but new ones are not needed - and there is zero patience or politeness for those still trying :)

3. The diaper market is huge - fancy colours, matching colours etc all possible, equally huge is the variety of functionality which one will only find out in practice :)

4. There is only one direction one can/should walk in: the nose - everywhere else: really great backpacks exist!

5. Apparently, one can live a long, good life with occasional pizza and croissants. - Although one recently had to cut out the pizza treats cause of high phosphate (kidneys …) - croissant still safe!
Cheers to that!

IfEE’s Laboratory Anthropology of Environment | Human Relations (LAEHR) warmly invites to the next event of our summer term 2026 series:

Talk & Paper Discussion:

“Recalling rains, unsettling waters: affective politics and the infrastructures of life in Jerusalem”

Emilie Glazer (Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin)
@em.w.g

This session will explore the politics of water in Palestine/Israel, with a focus on the falls of rain. Where water is governed by an occupying power, rain can index the extremes of infrastructural control, just as it can reveal its limits, holding possibilities beyond the state, recalling other ways. By following these waters, I will trace the forms of political violence and partial sovereignty that surface in the governance of life under intensifying settler colonial rule, in the shadow of genocide and ecocide, and unsettling seasonal rains, to consider overlooked nodes of accountability, political imaginaries, and practices of ongoing repair.

Moderation: Elisabeth Luggauer (IfEE, LAEHR) @elisabeth.luggauer

Reading & Discussion: „Struggling for Time. Environmental Governance and Agrarian Resistance in Israel/Palestine“, Stanford University Press 2024,
with author Natalia Gutkowski

We are very happy that Natalia Gutkowski herself will join the session and will also provide an intro to the book!

Struggling for Time examines how time is used as a mechanism of control by the Israeli state and a site of mundane resistance among Palestinian agriculture professionals. Natalia Gutkowski unpacks power structures to show how a settler society lays moral claim on indigenous time through agrarian environmental policies, science, technologies, landscapes, and bureaucracy. Shifting the analysis of Israel/Palestine from land and space to time, she offers new insight into the operation of power in agrarian environments and develops a contemporary framework to understand land and resource grabs under temporal justifications.

Moderation: Elisabeth Luggauer (IfEE, HU Berlin) @elisabeth.luggauer

We are preparing this reading session as a collaborative effort and share reading impressions, comments, and questions in a joint pad.
Participation is, of course, also possible without preparation!

Everybody is very welcome to join!

For further information and access to the pad, the book, Zoom link, etc., please write to Elisabeth Luggauer (elisabeth.luggauer@hu-berlin.de).

IfEE's Laboratory Anthropology of Environment | Human Relations (LAEHR) warmly invites to the first event of our summer term 2026 series:

Talk & Discussion:

“A cog in the machine: violence against animals in Mexico”,

Iván Sandoval-Cervantes / @isandovalcervantes
(University of Nevada, Las Vegas)

In this presentation, anthropologist Iván Sandoval Cervantes discusses violence against animals in Mexico as part of a “violent machine.” He argues that by taking a serious look at violence against animals we can gain new insights into how violence in Mexico operates by analyzing how it is connected to other forms of violence and to changing ideas about justice.

moderation: Elisabeth Luggauer / @elisabeth.luggauer (IfEE)

Best for grey saturdays in Berlin: spending time with the growing #tinyforest - yay :-).

The planty collective is doing well, apparently inviting ‘new’ cohabitants, while still figuring out who these might be, and how they will co-function (or not?) - it is getting more and more exciting every day!

The #moawald (initiated by @kiezwald) in the Stadtgarten Moabit (operated by @zku.berlin and others) recently celebrated its first being-planted anniversary, meaning for me also more than one year of thinking, doing, and growing together - thanks a lot to all the #moawald companions, particularly @kiezwald, for this super rich and joyful ethnographic collaboration! #fieldworkatitsfinest taken in Moabiter Stadtgarten by @elisabeth.luggauer
