POV: You finally decide to purge the crap that’s been flying around and never went away. Learn to swat those mosquito people sooner rather than later.

It took me a couple of years and distance to finally gain clarity as to why I kept my guard up.

Life can be a Twinkie, if you put your part.
When I was in elementary school, I was teasing a boy during recess. A girl stepped between us and said, “Don’t do what you don’t want others to do to you.”

I don’t remember what I said that day, but I’ve never forgotten what she said.

Over time, that lesson became my guide for reciprocity: Give others what you want for yourself.

I try to apply that everywhere, from my closest relationships to the kind of society I want to live in. If you want respect, give it. If you want care, show it. If you want the freedom and support to build a good life, don’t deny others the same. If you want the benefits of community, contribute to it.

We won’t always get it right. But we can’t ask others to honor our humanity while treating theirs as optional. by @elisathehost
