Chuseok is like the Korean Thanksgiving. It’s a holiday celebrating the beginning of the Harvest season~ Always the 3rd weekend of September, on Autumn Equinox, when the harvest moon lights up the sky. Families prepare specific traditional foods and gather, giving thanks to the harvest, to life, to family, and to our ancestors. It’s also a new season of possibilities, prosperity & fresh new beginnings.

My mother’s birth certificate states her birthday is November 1st, but her mother told her she was born on Chuseok, a very special day. Back then, in the old country, it took 4-8weeks to record a baby’s birth, especially if you lived in the countryside.

Chuseok is a day filled with gratitude, love, light, blessings, bounty, hope+joy. This year it was just us, as Dad is now in Heaven with Halmony, my siblings were away, and other families were busy. Today was one of those truly spectacular, beautiful days Hawai’i is famous for: clear blue skies, kissed by cool trade winds and sunbeams falling upon the green mountains and tress as I drove to Bobs Celebration of Life. It was like heaven shined down upon us.

The room was full of longtime Gentry peers, friends & family over a lifetime. It was a lovely celebration, full of laughter and tears and stories, from beginning to end. The Kahu mentioned that the paddle out and scattering of ashes in the ocean, allows Bob to travel around the world through the currents and ultimately be with us, near and far, and always.

Bob was a man who always gave. He was a mentor and the salt of the earth friend to many who crossed his path. I was blessed to also see the side of him that was a beloved Papa Bear and big brother or 2nd Dad, while his brilliant mind and magnanimous heart left an indelible mark across Hawaii’s building industry and the world to whom ever had ever met him. His intensity and old school work ethic reminded me of my Dad, and I immediately loved him when we first met 20 years ago. Bob also had this rare, sitcom character bold sense of humor, and big Hawaiian warmth, that diffused any intimidation in any scenario…if you actually had your Sht together LOL. Mountains moved and laughter followed wherever he went.

He was one in a million.

With Gentry, he built 10,000 homes in Hawai’i, and from the stories and slideshow of photos, it’s obvious he’s had just as many epic bucket-list and boondoggle moments with friends, and as many crazy beautiful Hallmark movie moments with his Ohana. The entire room of people, sang his favorite song, Joy to the World~ and I saw Bob smile down from heaven. We all laughed and cried, loved, cherished and celebrated Bob Kayser, a Life well lived, with nothing but Love ❤️ Miss you dearly. Love you more.
