Sometimes, art is a fucking disaster. This hydrant illustration for The New Yorker proves it. How many times did I paint it, trying to make it right? Twenty times? Thirty? At some point I said “fuck it” and gave up, and sent them my least bad version (the fact that they published it, led the issue’s spots with it in fact, is sort of hilarious).
I try to share stories like this on school visits, though without the swearing (so far). Art is hard, art is messy, I tell the schoolchildren.
What’s the lesson here? Persevere? Give up? Get a fireplace? I don’t know. I do know that, as I get older, art comes easier to me, and then, at times, it doesn’t. Which is a good reminder, this thrum of anxiety, that’s inside all artists. And, with luck, the grace to be kind to ourselves, and start again taken in Greenwich Village by @elisha__cooper

I love what the New Yorker editors did with my art. That was clever/subtle to have my watery blue spots paired with the orange art in “Talk of the Town” (orange and blue, the colors of the Knicks, GO KNICKS!!).
A few spots weren’t used, a natural part of the process, so am sharing them here for fun. The Temple of Dendur reflecting pool, at the Met. And a street cleaner. Hatchibombotar! taken in Greenwich Village by @elisha__cooper

Case reveal! I always love making the case, and for those who haven’t peeled off the cover, here it’s our bird/cat on a bed/rug of flowers. This painting took FOREVER, a whole weekend of little flowers, during which I listened to three English Premier League games. Speaking of, I know we’ll all be watching Sunday. “Ferdinand” at the Carle! So cool to see Lawson’s black-and-white art up close. His clean line, sense of space, his humor (my own watercolor is an odd little color note at exhibit’s end).
If you’re near Amherst, GO! Or make a trip @carlemuseum.
And Leaf wrote the text in 45 minutes, one rainy afternoon?! Holy cow taken in Greenwich Village by @elisha__cooper

Really honored to have my art included in The Eric Carle Museum’s upcoming exhibit on “The Story of Ferdinand.”
I know this book has influenced so many of us, readers and artists both. I keep returning to that tree! This painting from my Emma book is a pretty direct theft (homage). I even drew the image on the packaging I used to send my art to The Carle (see second photo). The exhibit, “Under the Cork Tree: The Story of Ferdinand” opens May 9, and runs through November. I just know it’s going to be an amazing collection of original art and behind-the-scenes stuff from Munro Leaf and Robert Lawson’s classic. Big thanks to curator Jane Curley for including me, and to everyone at @carlemuseum. I can’t wait to come up and see the exhibit in person! taken in Greenwich Village by @elisha__cooper

Look closely, and you’ll see our guy flying out of green cardboard box. This in the large print which I’ve been bringing around to independent bookstores since The Rare Bird came out. And will send small cat print to first one who can tell me, without looking it up, the exact piece of music

Independent Bookstore Day is the 26th!
Okay, it’s April 26th, but who’s counting, and isn’t every day Independent Bookstore Day?
So an early shout-out of appreciation to independents I’ve visited this spring for this new book, from @booksaremagicbk to Three Lives & Co. (pictured here, no social media, old school). From @oblongbooks to @splitrockbks (and their great bookstore cat), to new children’s bookstore @spiralbooksnyc here in Soho. And thanks to @mcnallyjackson for picking “Rare Bird” as their book of the month!
I’ll be at another independent this Sunday. @astoriabookshop in Queens, at 11:30 for storytime & signing, with a special rescue cat appearance taken in Three Lives & Co by @elisha__cooper
