Today, the Eli Sunshine Fund proudly presented our most recent gift, a $200,000 check to support a critical research project focused on Ewing Sarcoma at Dr. Tulpule’s Lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Eli’s incredible older brother, Harry, presented the check to Dr. Tulpule and Dr. Julia Glade Bender… Eli’s doctor, and someone who has come to mean so much to our family.

We are overwhelmed with gratitude for every single person who helped make this possible. Whether you gave a dollar, held a bake sale, attended one of our events… or shared information to raise awareness about Ewing Sarcoma and Childhood Cancer… we are forever grateful.

With your help and support… we believe we can find a cure for Ewing Sarcoma and end Childhood Cancer.

What an incredible day! ☀️💙☀️

We are so grateful to everyone who helped make our Mahjong & Canasta event such a success.

Together, we raised over $85,000 to advance innovative Ewing Sarcoma research and bring birthday celebrations to children undergoing cancer treatment.

To everyone who attended, played, donated, purchased raffle tickets, contributed prizes or volunteered, THANK YOU!

Seeing so many people come together in Eli’s honor meant so much to our family. Eli had a special gift for bringing people together, and seeing those connections continue through The Eli Sunshine Fund means so much to us.

We are always so moved and grateful for the many ways people continue to honor Eli. Rodeph Sholom School, where Eli attended for several years, has been so thoughtful and supportive of our family.

Last year, the school held a Service Learning Day in Eli’s honor in collaboration with New York Common Pantry. We know that doing something with this organization would have been especially meaningful to him for so many reasons.

As part of the day, students created a beautiful sunshine-themed mosaic, which was recently put on display along with a plaque.

We are so grateful to the entire Rodeph Sholom School community and to everyone who continues to share stories about Eli, speak his name and find ways to keep him part of their lives. Knowing that he continues to be remembered means more to us than I could ever put into words. by @elisunshinefund

What happens when a parent is told there is no Plan B for their sick child?

This September we honor children and families affected by pediatric cancer for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. I’m deeply grateful to Hayley for trusting me with this part of her son Eli’s story.

The 1st photo is Eli in 2016 at age 2 on his 1st day of school. The 2nd photo is Eli on his last, 1st day of school. I wonder each year, what would be on his 1st day school board.

Across the country, our feeds are filling with first-day photos. New backpacks, new classrooms, new grades and so much excitement for the year ahead.Back-to-school season can bring a range of experiences for families affected by Childhood Cancer.

Some children may be unable to return to school while they are in treatment or taking extra precautions to protect their health. Parents and caregivers may be supporting their child through a school year that looks different than expected.

For families remembering a child who is no longer here, this season may bring its own mix of emotions.

As we celebrate first days and new beginnings, we also want to acknowledge the many ways families may be experiencing this time of year.

There’s something deeply moving in Hayley’s words about the simple act of remembering.

For someone carrying the loss of a person they love, knowing that their life continues to be remembered by others can mean more than we realize.

This week on Curveball, I had the privilege of sitting down with Hayley Friedman Morrison, co-founder of the Eli Sunshine Fund, for a conversation that meant a great deal to me personally.

Hayley’s son, Eli, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma at just six years old. After two and a half years of treatment and clinical trials, Eli passed away in June 2023 at the age of nine. In the years since his diagnosis, Hayley has turned her love for Eli into an extraordinary force for good, building community, bringing sunshine to families facing childhood cancer, and advancing new treatments for pediatric cancer.

I’m grateful to Hayley for trusting me with her Eli’s story and for sharing the work she and her community are doing to make a difference for other children and families.
