⚠️ UK Government Issues GPS warning ⚠️

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) have issued a warning to yachtsman about reliance on GPS.

The warning comes following a significant rise in jamming and spoofing which means that GPS needs to be treated with caution as it is no longer necessarily reliable. The MCA recommends that mariners practice navigation using alternatives to GPS, and asks seafarers to review onboard operations to ensure they’re not reliant on the technology but have the competency and equipment available to navigate by traditional means, such as using traditional charts, dividers and plotters.

‘The guidance reiterates the importance of being able to navigate without relying on satellite positioning, and looks at radar fixing, visual bearings, celestial navigation and even good old-fashioned dead reckoning as valid methods to consider’

Picture of the month! ⛵️ 📸

This incredible picture was too good not to share!
Taken by one of our awesome crew, who was out sailing with us. These are the infamous Red Sands Towers. 💫

You can see them from the shore near Whistable, but it’s always amazing to get up close to them. Built in 1943, these anti aircraft forts were built to protect our shores (and especially London!) during WW2. Today they stand as an eerie reminder, abandoned and weathering the harsh conditions of the Thames Estuary.

This is just one of the awesome and iconic sites in our core training grounds 🧡

Behind the scenes, Tonic is looking beautiful 🤩

Tonic’s maintenance is underway, she’s been jet washed and anti fouled. Now other general maintenance is underway, such as fixing a misbehaving cutlery drawer! 😵‍💫 As well as re-seating and sealing a couple of stanchions, and having a new part custom made.

Tonic is out of the water for one more week, before splash down and more maintenance when she’s back in. Including a full engine service.

Tonic is an adventure sailing boat, she is on expedition for more than 6 months of the year, including 3 circumnavigations of Britain, so when she’s back at base she is always well looked after, and any maintenance that can’t be done on passage is prioritised by the team to get her completely ship shape and rest for her next adventure! 🧡

What an incredible sunrise during some early morning sail training out in the estuary 🌅

⏰ An early alarm clock for this training crew. Saw them set off at 04.30 for some visual night pilotage in the Thames estuary.
Rewarded with the most spectacular of sunrises before the fog rolled in and they had the chance to practice some real-world blind navigation and fog protocol. (Followed by a full English at anchor! 😋)

Behind the scenes at Elite… It was haul out day today for Tonic! 🎥

After a busy season, she’s out of the water, ready for some TLC. 🧡

After @hodgeontheweb removed her back stays and foresail, the yard team at @mdlmarinas Chatham carefully positioned a cradle and guide line before lifting her to the yard. Massive shout out to Amber, Wayne and Bernard for doing a fantastic job as ever. 🔥

Our engineer, Danny will be busy over the next few days working through some annual maintenance jobs to get Tonic ready for her next big adventure.

What an epic inaugural ‘Curry cruise’ ! 🍛 ⛵️

Last weekend, Lightning and her crew of adventurous sailors set off on our first ever Curry Cruise. A fun adventure sailing weekend in search of a fantastic night out and curry! And it didn’t disappoint 🧡

The crew had a fantastic sail to Ramsgate, learning loads and having a chance to practice various skills (including passage planning), before enjoying a fantastic night out. The crew were up at first light, welcomed on deck to a glorious sunrise, before an epic and speedy sail home. 🌊 ⛵️

We think this is what weekends are made for! 🤘🏻
