it’s been five years since the attempt i took on my own life. each year when this day rolls around, i often find it difficult to get through the days. this year, however, i want to switch the narrative to use today as a reflection of how grateful i am to still be here.

since that day, my life has changed in more ways than i thought imaginable—because how could a thirteen year old possibly know what was ahead? eighth grade me never even believed she would see the beginning of high school, but here i am, standing as a college student surrounded by love and support.

since march 28, 2021 i: started college, saw my favs in concert, received all-state accolades for speech, got glasses, tried solo ensemble, became a hugger, started theater, traveled, received awards from the iowa governor, (started to) learn to drive, made impactful change in my community, got addicted to energy drinks, joined a sisterhood bursting with love, took my braces off, got a job, and began to love myself—scars and all.

surviving after an attempt hasn’t been easy, but the people in my life have made it ten times easier. so thank you. and i love you.

these pictures reflect just a SLIVER of the people, places, and things that have been important to me in my journey the last five years. there are so many more i wish i could include. and isn’t that a beautiful thing? to have too many things to love that i can’t include them all?

for anyone struggling with the question of “do i stay?” the answer is yes. wholeheartedly yes. there is so much more for you to come than you believe. stay for yourself and the dreams i know you have.
