@joeyvalence and @heyybrae first crossed paths in 2018 during their freshman year at State College, Pennsylvania. Bound by shared musical interests and the same humour, the duo began making music together in their Penn State dorms. In April 2021, their viral debut single, ‘Crank It Up’, put them firmly on the radar of hip-hop fans worldwide, with many likening their sound and energy to the Beastie Boys, while their style—baggy jeans, sleek oval sunglasses, and baseball caps—recalled the fashion trends of the late nineties and early noughties. The duo’s cult fanbase has since grown exponentially. Prolific creators, they released their debut album, ‘PUNK TACTICS’, in September 2023 under their own label, JVB Records. The album’s title track garnered hundreds of millions of streams, as did hits like ‘STARTAFIGHT’ and ‘HOOLIGANG’—the latter inevitably becoming the nickname for the band’s fanbase. Nine months later, they followed up with their second self-released LP, ‘NO HANDS’. Tracks like ‘THE BADDEST’ continued to build hype around the group’s live performances, with footage of their bold, adrenaline-fuelled stage walkouts, paired with attention-grabbing captions like ‘fun music is BACK’ taking the internet by storm. Showing no signs of slowing down, the duo released their third album after signing to RCA Records. ‘HYPERYOUTH’, unveiled at the tail end of the summer, continues to deliver high-octane, jump-up club bangers while simultaneously exploring a more emotionally resonant soundscape, tackling themes of childhood nostalgia and adolescent fears. About a year or so ago, @willdownes sent me one of their COLD walk out videos, and I’ve remained a big fan ever since, so it was a great pleasure to catch up with @jvbsucks in their dressing room before watching them and the HOOLIGANG tear apart a sold out Shepherd’s Bush Empire, which @elizabethlenthall captured brilliantly as always 📸.
