after much pain and heartbreak, I learned that only pouring out my frustrations before the Lord about everyday challenges wasn’t going to help me heart.

there was something deeper still that I needed to voice to God.

and ultimately it was my fear of failing at faith, and wondering how and if He would intervene.

and when I ponder on that thought, the sadness lingers, building up, like a child when they’re trying to hold back tears, and all you want to do is call out for your parent in a time of need.

that’s what this song exactly is.

all of this questioning is a crescendo to the point of calling out to God, not even caring about answers. but calling out for rescue despite a lack of understanding.

it’s hard to notate in a caption. but hopefully this idea resonates with you.

if you find yourself in a season like me with questions on pain on grief on “making meaning”, release yourself from the expectation to articulate your emotions, fears, doubts, and hopes perfectly to the Lord. He already knows child 🤍 He just wants to be let in.

at the time of writing this song, I was just so undone by my life. I was six months into my first job after finishing graduate school, and I was full of questions; questions about leaving a town where I built a life. at the time I was on the path to be an educator and a mentor to future worship leader. and then God shuts the doors to lead me another path. and this path only had broken hearts, confusion, pain, slight of hand, betrayal, and other things that only hind sight could provide.

for once in my life, projecting Christianese language and “hanging in there” to tough it out through the storm wasn’t going to propel me to deeper intimacy with the Lord. actually it aggravated me to be unauthentically positive in deep pain when I was really struggling. but going to Him with the little courage I had left to say “I’m having hard time knowing You’re actually who You say You are” in that season gave room to validate my fears, and not condemn them. and surpassingly, I was expecting a lot of backlash from God in expressing what I really harbored in this trying time; but in that moment and several to come following the time of writing this song, I was met with His compassion. praise God He is slow to anger.

I did this post back in 2023 before moving out to Williamsburg, and it only feels fitting to post about as a chapter closes and a new one begins.

I think too much of content we see are the beginnings and the ends of things, and I’m thankful through storytelling reels that we can see progressions. the building. the skill learning. the curating. the decluttering. the making. one day, it can be looked back upon the provision of God or growth or things unfolding the way they were meant to.

so I will recap with gratitude in a post to come with so many joys and people I’m blessed by. But this post is to say: the figuring out part can stink. the people who stick by through doubts, grief, and questions are precious. there is a good in being honest with where you are at, and one day looking back, you can be grateful for all that transpired because of how you grew, who you met, who you impacted, and what became afterwards.

gratitude and honesty. I’m thoroughly surprised that in the midst of a weighty year, im stilled blessed to run out of carousel room to share and highlight moments that make me laugh, bringing joy and life. each of these moments and more hold such pillars of gratitude, remembrance, and great peace when I recount the past year. and somehow simultaneously, the honesty of grief, sorrow, and questioning puts the cracks into a piece of pottery that lets the light of gratitude to shine through. cliche? maybe. very accurate and realized this year? maybe so. and somehow in the midst of storms, trials, and wilderness season, the Lord graciously deposits moments, friends, moments of his tangible presence to permeate through the crud to breakthrough hard and ordinary moments, reminding us that we were made for more, and the more is found in the “feeling our way towards the One true God”. twenty twenty five, you’re a-okay, and I’m also happy it’s come to an end. the Lord is strong and mighty, for Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. come quickly and here’s to another year. by @elizabethlongli
