Two years ago, I was struck by an idea. Since then, I’ve been working on bringing that idea to life — on multiple fronts.

1. To create a tool for individual and group discovery — a tool that bridges our inner life with those of our friends, family, and colleagues. This tool is a deck of values – "Animae: the Source, a values-based deck." As a printmaker, I created 48 abstract collagraph symbols that represent 48 core values. The deck includes eight suggested activities for further guidance, but in all seriousness, just pulling a value at random is insightful and at times quite magical.

2. To produce a body of fine art collagraph prints for a solo show. I have two planned now. The first will display the original fine art prints of the 48 values at the Marblehead Arts Association August 9th - September 21st and is titled “Alchemy in Print.” The second is a show of high-quality canvas wrapped reproductions of each of the value images, enlarged to 11”x14”. This show is on view now and canvasses are for sale at Illume Books through June! Entering the newly renovated Illume Gallery and seeing these larger versions of my work on display has been a dream come true and deeply meaningful to me.

3. To organize and facilitate workshops which utilize my values deck and expressive arts to facilitate the discovery of the participants’ core values. This workshop will be available at Illume Gallery. Stay tuned!

4. To work with businesses on bringing values-discovery to their teams. This is in the works.

I am immensely proud of this work and of the layers I’ve envisioned that are now coming to light. But more than that, I am deeply moved to hear about and witness the interactions people are having with the deck; not only with the art — but with the values themselves.

"Animae" is Latin for "of the soul" and so far this is exactly that. Taking just a few moments to focus on values, whether it’s synchronistically or purposefully chosen, can truly change the course of your day. From the dinner table to the conference room, there is no wrong value. They offer a moment to reflect and to discuss. What value is seeking you?

This is how the Animae deck began, the process behind the cards.

Ink, pressure, paper, and something underneath all of that I can only call intention. Each of the 48 values in this deck was hand-pulled on an etching press in my studio. No two prints identical. That felt right for values work. Nothing about the inner life is identical either.

Two years of making. One symbol, one card at a time.

My daughter is graduating 8th grade this week. For her "This I Believe" speech, we sat down together with the Animae values deck.

We flipped through the cards several times, I urged her to go with her gut, no overthinking, just instinct, until we narrowed it down to ten. Then one. Integrity. Once she named it, the speech essentially wrote itself.

She wrote: "This I believe: integrity means doing the right thing, even when no one is watching. And it takes intuition, courage, open-mindedness, and empathy to live that way."

Intuition. Courage. Open-mindedness. Empathy. All in her top ten.

She didn't need me to tell her what mattered. She already knew. The deck just helped her see it.

That is what values work does.

I could not be more proud of her. 🤍

Two original collagraph prints are traveling to Amsterdam.

Authenticity and Responsibility — hand-pulled on the etching press, part of the Animae series — will be shown in the Summer Exhibition at Artfello Amsterdam, opening June 25.

When I was a teenager I spent six weeks on a homestay in Oss, Netherlands through AFS Intercultural Programs. The Netherlands and my host family left something in me I've never quite named. To have work I made slowly, by hand, with intention now crossing an ocean to show there — it closes something. Or maybe opens it. 💓

Thank you to my Dutch family and friends for everything you shared and taught me. And thank you @artfelloplatform for this opportunity.

🌟 What an honor to share that Vivi’s sculpture, “The Tinies Channel,” created for her school’s 8th grade White Shirt Project, has been selected for the "Curiously Gorey" exhibit at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in collaboration with the Edward Gorey House.

Inspired by Edward Gorey’s delightfully macabre world, Vivi upcycled a wooden box into a vintage television, incorporating a collared white shirt illustrated with imagery inspired by The Gashlycrumb Tinies. She added personal details—her initials (G.E.L.), her nickname, repurposed guitar knobs from her dad, a hanger-turned-antenna, and hand-cut bats—creating a piece that feels both gothic and wholly her own.

She says she’s loved the White Shirt Project since sixth grade and knew she wanted her piece to reflect how she expresses herself. Discovering Gorey’s work (and the old Masterpiece Mystery openings!) made everything click.

She is over the moon with pride and excitement. (As we are. 🧡)

🚘 We took a girls’ road trip today to deliver her art—and of course stopped by Gorey’s house for a commemorative selfie. She’s already planning a return visit for her 14th birthday in April when they reopen for the season.

🧡 Deep gratitude to the Cultural Center and the Edward Gorey House for including her in this show.

It feels surreal to know two of my value-symbols from Animae: The Source are hanging in the Winter Salon exhibition at Galleri SoHo in Västerås, Sweden — and to have the Values Decks available there as well. Values on view/sale: “Responsibility” and “Authenticity.”

🤍 I’m truly honored to be part of an international art association, and I can’t wait to get more involved.
